My parents always took the family on a vacation each year. We would all be rounded up into our full-sized Chevy van and hauled all over the western half of the United States. This was long before mobile phones were common companions and before TVs could be found in cars.
We each had our own stack of activities to do during those trips. Sometimes the family spent days in a row cooped up in that van trying to find ways not to kill each other. I had my football cards. My sister had her books. My other sisters had their Barbie dolls. None of us really had what we really wanted for those long trips—something electronic to watch and play.
Those times are long gone. I don’t know how my parents survived on those trips without mobile electronic devices. As soon as Addie was even remotely capable of handling an Ipod, we made sure the thing was loaded with all kinds of kid movies to keep her happy in the back of the car while on a long distance trips.
The release of the Ipod Touch just increased our arsenal of electronics to throw at the kids while we’re undergoing long distance trips. My Ipod Touch was immediately loaded with princess and fairy oriented apps the first day I owned it. Whenever I can find a good kid-friendly app, I am sure to load it on my Ipod. And I am ALWAYS on the lookout for good kid-friendly apps to load onto my Ipod.
Recently, Disney released the “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Road Rally Appisode” for the Ipad and the “Jake’s Never Land Pirate School” app for the Ipad, Iphone, and Ipod Touch. These are both great apps that are kid-safe, fun, and educational at the same time.
“Jakes Never Land Pirate School” app is a game that allows kids to play games and complete challenges in Never Land. Kids can hunt for doubloons on Doubloon Beach and can practice their skills in sailing and pixie dust. The “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Road Rally Appisode” is an app for the Ipad that allows kids to interact throughout episodes of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. Both of my kids try to interact with episodes of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse while it is on TV anyway, so allowing them to actually interact with an episode is going to blow their little minds.
Mickey Mouse Clubhouse isn’t the only show that Disney has decided to make available online either. Disney Junior WATCH has made free full length episodes of various Disney shows available at www.watchdisneyjunior.com and through the “Disney Junior WATCH” app available on Ipad, Iphone and Ipod Touch. Full-length episodes of Disney shows will be available on Disney Junior WATCH for ten days after its original air date. Comcast Xfinity subscribers get access to premium content like the live feed of the network. If you are not a subscriber to Comcast Xfinity, be sure to request that your cable provider make the service available via the website or the app.
