Today Show's Jenna Wolfe Proudly Comes Out and Announces BabySerge Bielanko
Jenna Wolfe, the weekend anchor of NBC’s Today show pleasantly surprised viewers this week when she announced on air that she was pregnant with her first child.
But as sweet as that news always is to hear from anyone, Wolfe wasn’t done with the big news just there. She went on to say that she was having the baby ( a girl!) with her girlfriend, NBC news correspondent Stephanie Gosk.
(I happened to be on the elliptical in the gym at the time and I have to say, it was a pretty awesome little moment to witness, even as I was sweating like a pig and reading the close-captioning through the salted eye slits.)
During a week when the Supreme Court is weighing the legality of gay marriage in our country, Wolfe (and her partner’s) public declaration both of their sexuality and the fact that they are excited parents-to-be comes as a monumental prime-time endorsement for gay and lesbian unions to be acknowledged as normal family-based relationships, just like any heterosexual one.
“This is the most exciting thing that has ever happened to us,” Wolfe told PEOPLE magazine in an exclusive interview. “But I don’t want to bring my daughter into a world where I’m not comfortable telling everyone who I am and who her mother is.”
It’s never easy, I suspect, to come out. And it certainly probably requires quite a bit of pondering when you throw in the fact that you might just do it on national television in front of millions of people. But for Wolfe and Gosk, both of whom live inside our televisions, it proved a natural way to get the thing done.
“The beauty is that we live in a time where there’s no need for secrecy,” Gosk, 40, told People. “This is a spectacular moment for us.”
Lastly, it should be noted that Jenna Wolfe will be keeping a blog-diary of her pregnancy on the Today Show’s website called (Baby) Food for Thought .
Here’s wishing this new family all the very best!
