A Blessing from Dad: Remember to Tell Your Kids How Important They Are

father with son on hands sunny daySometimes as dads we forget the most obvious things.

In the midst of busy lives where we rush everywhere, try to work healthy food and exercise into our kids’ lives, along with setting aside enough time for fun, do we always remember to take a minute and tell our kids, directly, that they are very important to us?

Every once in a while it hits me how infrequently those words come out of my mouth. I think and feel these things all the time, but how often do I actually SAY, out loud, looking my children in the eyes, “I love you. I am very lucky to have you in my life. I learn things from you. You make me a better person. I am grateful.”

As dads, we need to remember that in the eyes of our children, we are of equal status to any teacher, or pastor, or even Santa Claus. Our words of acknowledgement are a powerful force in their lives.

Senator Joe Lieberman described it this way: “One of the most important things I would encourage people to do would be to . . . bless our children. It has a lot of meaning, for the children, to tell them how important they are to us, and for us, to tell us what a blessing our children are. It also reminds us that we have the capacity to bless, something a lot of people think is just reserved to rabbis and pastors and priests.”

It sounds so simple. What are we waiting for?
