There are some movies that you watch and the experience is just keeping your eyes focused on a screen for two hours. Then there are those other movies; films that touch you, move you, and that find a place in your heart … permanently. The kind of film that is timeless and continues to feel fresh and relevant no matter when it was produced. Disney’s The Lion King is one of those films.
I was reminded of the power and majesty of this still-as-popular-as-ever-film this month because it is celebrating its 20th, yes 20th anniversary. And you know what? It is shocking, yes shocking, to realize that it has been 20 years since I first met Simba, Mufasa, Nala, Scar and the rest of the unforgettable animals. It seems like just yesterday when it debuted. While I may have sprouted a few gray hairs and developed a few random wrinkles, the legacy of this tale is totally ageless.
The Lion King is the kind of story us parents pass down to children, a story that is so poignant that the stage production has made history with it’s record breaking success. And The Lion King was the most successful animated film ever until it was recently surpassed by Frozen. This just illustrates the power of great storytelling, tales that touch generations, in so many different ways, over a course of decades. In honor of this anniversary, I’ve put together ten ways to celebrate this milestone from treats to crafts. Join me as we celebrate the legacy of a true classic.
Lion King Cupcake
My daughter and I made these Lion King inspired cupcakes and it was ridiculously easy.
We just took a standard vanilla cake mix, made our cupcakes, and then made a butter cream frosting (with a little orange tint). We then bought one of those icing tubes from our local supermarket in black to create the eyes, nose and mouth. We finished the culinary creation off with packaged kettle corn.
Best of all, it's an easy decorating project for kids! My daughter had the BEST time making these...oh and they are delicious too.
