Boo! 10 Non-Scary Movies For Halloween Lovers

As the spooky season approaches, there is nothing better than closing the curtains, turning out all the lights, and snuggling under a blanket as you have the wits scared out of you.

No? Not your idea of fun? There are plenty of folk like you…

My good friend Claire loves all things Halloween but states clearly, “I don’t do horror.” Fair enough. Although it one of my favorite genres, it isn’t for everyone.  So for all the folks who love Halloween but want some family friendly spooky fun that isn’t going to scare the willies out of them – there are plenty of great movies to choose from.

What, may you ask, am I doing this All Hallow’s Eve? Well, every year I throw myself my son a party, invite all his friends over, decorate the house with more Halloween tat than you can shake a stick at, make some Oreo spiders and spooky buns, a few creepy martinis for the adults, load up on candy for treaters, and then we all head out and trick or treat en masse. Usually in the great British weather — rain. After a few hours of freezing our behinds off, we head home — the kids on a sugar high — and we pull out a movie to watch…

My own favorite, will always be the Disney classic The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Have a look at the list below and let me know what yours is?

And mwwhhh ha ha ha ha ha ha ha Happy Halloween!

  • Hocus Pocus 1 of 10
    hocus

When Max Dennison innocently sneaks into an old museum and lights a black candle on Halloween, little does he know what trouble he has unleashed. The three Sanderson sisters have been brought back to life! But who are these 3 screeching women? Only 3 witches who intend to use the local children for energy to keep them eternally young.... the witches only have until dawn to get more souls, or they will be turned to dust! Bette Midler is in fine camp form, Kim Najimy is wonderfully wicked, and Sarah Jessica Parker has never been more giggly as one of the sisters. Will they live to see another Hallow's Eve??

  • The Legend of Sleepy Hollow 2 of 10
    sleepy hollow

Hand on heart this is my FAVORITE Halloween movie of all time. When I was a kid, it was always on tv — Bing Crosby narrating Disney's creepy tale of Ichabod Crane, the teacher who competes with Brom Bones for the hand of fair maiden Katrina Van Tassel. Legend has it that a headless horseman rides through the forest, seeking a head to replace his own. When Ichabod has to journey home alone one night through the haunted forest, he encounters the horseman ... will he make it home?

  • The Addams Family 3 of 10
    addams

The Addams family is quite unlike any other family you've ever known: Gomez, Morticia, Lurch, Grandmama, Pugsley, Wednesday, Pubert, Thing, and Cousin It... With the catchy theme tune (click click) and the family's spooky interests, there is much to love in this family friendly film. Morticia and Gomez act like lovesick teenagers, much to the disgust of their children. Wednesday, meanwhile, is certainly full of woe. As for Thing — if only every home had such a helpful hand...

  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer 4 of 10
    buffy

The film that spawned the series: Buffy the Vampire Slayer starred Kirsty Swanson as Buffy, a cheerleader who discovers she is a Slayer, called to battle against vampires. She is drawn into conflict with a local vampire king named Lothos, who has killed a number of past Slayers. As if life isn't complicated enough, Buffy has also fallen for her friend Oliver... But with Lothos on her heels and her Watcher (trainer and guide) Merrick unable to defend her, what will happen to Buffy?

  • It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown 5 of 10
    snooky

Could there be a cuter Halloween movie? Never! Where is the Great Pumpkin that Linus hopes to see? Big sis Lucy has to come to his rescue, and bring poor Linus and his blanket home... If you watch this sweet little film, you'll be reaching for your carving utensils in a matter of seconds, for what is Halloween, without a great big pumpkin to carve?

  • The Nightmare Before Christmas 6 of 10
    nightmare

Technically more of a Christmas film, I'm still including this one because of the beauty of the spooky goings-on in Tim Burton's beautiful Halloween town. God bless Burton for writing a poem while working as a Disney animator in 1982. This was the humble beginnings of Jack Skellington. The Pumpkin King, as he is known, leads the town in a frightful celebration every Halloween, but he has grown tired of the same routine year after year. Wandering in the forest outside the cemetery, he accidentally opens a portal to Christmas Town, with disastrous consequences...

  • The Rocky Horror Picture Show 7 of 10
    rocky

My love for all things Rocky Horror knows no bounds. Where to begin? When Brad and Janet's car breaks down and they pop into the closest (spooky) house, little do they know what time warp they have stepped into. There's Dr. Frankfurter, who is just a cheap transvestite from Transylvania, the creepy butler Riff-Raff, his sister Majenta, and a whole host of weird and wonderful characters. The music is spectacular, the plot somewhat adrift, and nothing really is as it seems. But who cares, grab your lighter, your lashes and your best singing voice and remember, it's just a jump to the left.....

  • Practical Magic 8 of 10
    magic 2

Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman play sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, who have always known they were different. Raised by their aunts, the sisters grew up in a household where they were taught the uses of practical magic. But the invocation of the Owens' sorcery also carries a high price, in fact it could be called a curse — the men they fall in love with are doomed to an untimely death. Now adult women, the quiet Sally and the fiery Gillian must use all of their powers to fight the supernatural forces that could take away all the Owen's lives. Are they strong enough?

  • Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Askaban 9 of 10
    harry as

With seven Harry Potter films to choose from, why did I pick this one? Because for me, it is beautifully directed, utterly gripping, works as a stand alone film (in case you haven't seen the other ones) and was easily the best book! Harry's Uncle and Voldemort supporter Sirius Black has escaped Askaban and is intent on killing Harry! As dementors guard Hogwarts, will Harry be safe? Meanwhile, the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Mr Lupin, is a tad odd, disappearing whenever there is a full moon. With his invisibility cloak and Marauderers map, will Harry be able to escape Black's clutches?

  • Ghostbusters 10 of 10
    ghost

Who you gonna call? Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), Raymond Stantz (Dan Aykroyd), and Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis) obviously! These three have lost their jobs, so decide to become Ghostbusters, as you do. Initially they find it hard to get work, but when they begin to contain ghost after ghost, and NYC becomes a paranormal stomping ground, they find themselves becoming celebrities. But when the contained ghosts are suddenly released, are the team's proton packs gonna be enough? And wait, is that a Marshmallow Man? Family fluff for everyone!
