It’s a question for the ages, I know, and not a bad conversation starter at that.
If you’re the “read it first” type, Hollywood is challenging you to keep the stack of books on your bedside table moving along to keep up. Studios are releasing films based on books at a fast clip this year, ranging from light romance to lush adaptations of classic novels.
Unlike me, I am sure you have already caught The Great Gatsby since its May release, and it may have inspired you to re-check out F. Scott Fitzgerald’s original novel. Just the previews alone made me want to re-read it, preferably with some jazz on low in the background. If Dickens is more your speed, Great Expectations is another classic you can catch re-imagined on-screen later this year . I think I’m most excited to catch up with the film version of one of the classic mainstays of the young adult genre - Tiger Eyes, by Judy Blume.
I used to be a die-hard read-it-firster myself, but as my reading time has gotten shorter, I’m running out of time to finish all the pages before I want to queue films up on On-Demand, or catch them in the theater. Taking a peek at the list of great options coming from page to screen this year made me really want to sit down with a few of these stories before I experience them as films, though.
And really, if you never do that, how can you ever complain that the movie just wasn’t as good as the book? That’s still part of the fun.
Which of these recent or upcoming 2013 releases have you read?
