30 Generation X Stars You Won’t Believe Are Turning 50 in 2014

Being within Generation X makes getting older some kind of choose your own adventure situation. How will you age? Will you embrace it, conquer it, surrender to it, deny it? The members at the the front of the spectrum of Gen X are crossing a big threshold this year: They are turning fifty. That’s right. You heard me. Gen-Xers born in 1964 are turning FIFTY this year.

I am absolutely the person who can’t keep it to herself when she is shocked over a person’s age. Usually this happens when someone I am talking to mentions having a kid in college or a grandchild and I do a double-take. Sometimes I am incredibly rude and blurt out, “Wait, how old are you?”

I assume everyone I interact with is my age. And when it comes to “my age” I keep thinking I am 33 despite the fact that I just turned 38 on Christmas Eve. I am always surprised to find out someone is older than I am, but the surprise is entirely awe and reverence. It is the realization that I am an 8th grader on the school bus and a cool high school kid is TALKING TO ME.

When it comes to celebrities I follow the same sort of age blindness. Everyone is in their ’30, right? Except last year Coolio turned 50 and that apparently really shocked me. It just seems impossible that so many Gen X icons are turning 50 in 2014. And yet, here they go…

30 Gen X Stars Turning 50 in 2014:

  • Look Who’s Turning 50 1 of 31
    Celebrities Turning 50 in 2014

Some names on this list may not surprise you at all, while others may completely freak you out. I will admit I thought one or two of these actors had already achieved this milestone, but it would have been rude to keep them out of the party. Put on your favorite '90s mixed tape and brace yourself.

  • Nicolas Cage – January 7 2 of 31
    Celebrities Turning 50 in 2014

When I think of Nicolas Cage I always think of the bread maker in his undershirt from Moonstruck. You know, the passionate character who Cher has to slap and yell at to, "Snap out of it!" These days Nicolas has a reputation of taking any role that comes his way, but in a recent interview with The Guardian he shares: "I'm at this point where I don't want to act. It's not about putting things on, it's about taking things off. And trying to be as naked as I can be as a film presence."

  • Michelle Obama – January 17 3 of 31
    Celebrities Turning 50 in 2014

Our first lady is having a dance party later this month when she turns 50! The Chicago Tribune is reporting the event is quietly in the works and invitations have already been mailed from the White House. The "Snacks & Sips & Dancing & Dessert" guests are being told, "Wear comfortable shoes, eat before you come and practice your dance moves."

  • Mariska Hargitay – January 23 4 of 31
    Celebrities Turning 50 in 2014

Mariska recently told the Ladies Home Journal that she wasn't always confident. She explains: "I spent most of my 20s having people say no to me. I'd go on auditions and the casting directors would be like: You're not tall enough, you're not pretty enough, you're not blonde enough, your nose is too big, your nose is too small, your skin is too dark, your skin is too light, change your name! There was so much rejection. I didn't work for eight years. But my dad taught me not to give up."

  • Bridget Fonda – January 27 5 of 31
    Celebrities Turning 50 in 2014

The 1992 movie, Singles, was one of THOSE movies for me. I watched it thinking, "Yes, this is how I imagine my life is going to be in a few years." I completely related to the character of Janet, the hopeless romantic, played by Bridget. This line she says stuck with me from the very first time I saw the film: "I'm 23. Remember how old 23 seemed when you were little? I mean, I thought people would be traveling in airlocks and I would have 5 kids. Here I am 23 things are, um, basically the same. I think time is running out to do something bizarre. Somewhere around 25 bizarre becomes immature." IT TOTALLY DOES.

  • Laura Linney – February 5 6 of 31
    Celebrities Turning 50 in 2014

Laura has often been quoted on her thoughts about aging. As she gave interviews earlier this year about her starring role in The Big C she explained: "I hear so many people complaining about getting old; people want to go back in time. But aging is a tremendous privilege. The show really explores that message. We live in a culture that doesn't always value aging and I work in an industry that doesn't always appreciate it. So it is an interesting vortex to live within. It is human nature to be cavalier about time, but time is so valuable. I don't want to waste my time, and I want to be exactly where I am."

  • Matt Dillon – February 18 7 of 31
    Celebrities Turning 50 in 2014

The first movie I ever saw with Matt Dillon in it was The Outsiders. The film starred every cute boy in Hollywood at the time and that made it a MUST SEE in 1983. It seems like Matt has taken a quiet turn in regards to interviews, these days, but he continues to work steadily on projects.

  • Rob Lowe – March 17 8 of 31
    Celebrities Turning 50 in 2014

Rob has never looked better. He told Manhattan magazine, "All my life choices since are based on being in recovery. I learned to focus on what's real rather than imagined; on not letting feelings drive the bus; on being courageous and honest; on putting my total effort into something and not worrying about the result." Wise words from Lowe, who has been sober for over 20 years.

  • Elle Macpherson – March 29 9 of 31
    Celebrities Turning 50 in 2014

Elle has always been stunning. Always. She is incredibly passionate about her work, and she credits that with giving her balance. She recently told UK's Red, "When work and passion comes together it's a beautiful thing. As I have matured, I have discovered that work doesn't have to be something just to make a living. If you find something you enjoy, then it's not work. It can become part of who you are."

  • Ian Ziering – March 30 10 of 31
    Celebrities Turning 50 in 2014

There is no easy way to say this ... Steve from Beverly Hills 90210 will be turning 50 this spring.

  • Russell Crowe – April 7 11 of 31
    Celebrities Turning 50 in 2014

I hope Russell doesn't take offense to this, but I actually thought he already WAS 50. It's not such a WOW moment for my brain because I didn't grow up watching Russell in anything.

  • Crispin Glover – April 20 12 of 31
    Celebrities Turning 50 in 2014

See? Crispin I DID grow up watching in the Back to the Future movies so there is this moment of, wow, that guy? He's turning 50? REALLY? Which obviously is more of a comment on my own age than anything else.

  • Melissa Gilbert – May 8 13 of 31
    Celebrities Turning 50 in 2014

Melissa will be starting off 2014 free from headache pain. The actress tweeted her confirmation of a story the National Enquirer broke revealing she "underwent a revolutionary nerve-blocking procedure." She also attributes her better health to moving to Michigan with her new husband, Timothy Busfield.

  • Lenny Kravitz – May 26 14 of 31
    Celebrities Turning 50 in 2014

This guy just has not aged at all. Seriously. One of his secrets could be that he has many different creative outlets. He's not just a musician and actor. He's also a much sought after interior designer. Lenny designed the set for Queen Latifah's new show in 2013.

  • Courteney Cox – June 15 15 of 31
    Celebrities Turning 50 in 2014

I was a little surprised to see Courteney on this list as I thought she was closer to my end of the Gen-X spectrum. Not to call too much attention to physicalities, but I honestly think Courteney should be the poster girl for turning 50.

  • Courtney Love – July 9 16 of 31
    Celebrities Turning 50 in 2014

When asked how she felt about her next birthday the former front-woman for Hole and 90's champion of the baby doll dress shared: "I look really good for my age, and I know it. It's irrelevant to me."

  • David Spade – July 22 17 of 31
    Celebrities Turning 50 in 2014

David will be busy this year. The comic will be writing a music industry comedy for HBO and if all goes according to plan, he could be starring in the show as well. I recently discovered David is one of those rare celebs who has a Google+ account and is active with it. He's a great follow.

  • John Leguizamo – July 22 18 of 31
    Celebrities Turning 50 in 2014

John always has an electric energy with everything he does. The comic turned actor has plans to have a long career in Hollywood. He told Miami Herald: "The great thing about acting: If you keep yourself motivated and challenged, you can do it the rest of your life. I still take acting classes, I study Shakespeare, I'm going back to the theater."

  • Sandra Bullock – July 26 19 of 31
    Celebrities Turning 50 in 2014

There are many actresses who have said they are terrified of aging because they fear the work will fade away. Sandra was once one of those afraid but with each year she has been surprised. She told NPR, "I had prepared myself for the second half of my life [to be] filled with other passions that don't include being in front of the camera. And then all of a sudden I got more work and more work and more work. And I went, 'Well maybe things have shifted.' And I think they have."

  • Lori Loughlin – July 28 20 of 31
    Celebrities Turning 50 in 2014

Aunt Becky from Full House will be turning 50 in July. This last summer a massive Full House bombshell was dropped when John Stamos said in a live Huffington Post interview that Lori was the one who got away. ZOMG Aunt Becky and Uncle Jesse dated in real life?!!

  • Vivica A. Fox – July 30 21 of 31
    Celebrities Turning 50 in 2014

Earlier this year BET asked the beautiful Vivica if she had any regrets or proud moments to share as she looked to her 50th birthday. Vivica replied: "Well, I don't do regret. I try to learn from my mistakes, and that is that. The thing I'm most proud of is that I left home when I was 17 years old with a goal to become a star, and I've been able to live that out beyond my wildest expectations. It makes me proud that I wasn't afraid to go in search of my dream."

  • Mary-Louise Parker – August 2 22 of 31
    Celebrities Turning 50 in 2014

Mary-Louise was recently quoted as saying she was ready to quit acting, but in a fantastic interview in The L Magazine she does a beautiful job clarifying and elaborating. Mary-Louise wants to shed part of the culture attached to acting. She explains: "There are days when I just feel so wildly imbalanced. I was at a press junket in London, and there I was texting my daughter's camp and my son's doctor at the same time, and it just does not stop. Unless, of course, you're willing to delegate, which I'm not. The thing is I've always been a single mother, and when I adopted my daughter it was as a single mother. I knew I was getting into something that was going to be too hard. And it is too hard. But I never would have not done it."

  • Debi Mazar – August 13 23 of 31
    Celebrities Turning 50 in 2014

Turning 50 will most likely be a shrug for Debi since her best friend, Madonna, is 55 and fabulous. Debi recently went on Watch What Happens Live to discuss her friendship with Madge.

  • Keanu Reeves – September 2 24 of 31
    Celebrities Turning 50 in 2014

The subject of Keanu's aging is something MUCH talked about in certain corners of the Internets. There are many websites dedicated to discussing his, well, immortality. (search term: keanu is immortal) The best way the star is staying young, in my opinion, is to stir the rumor pot for a sequel on a new Bill and Ted Adventure!

  • Rosie Perez – September 6 25 of 31
    Celebrities Turning 50 in 2014

Rosie is in LOVE! The actress just tied the knot in the fall of 2013 to artist Eric Hays. When talking about her Vegas wedding she joked: "He is the best guy ever. I'm so in love, it's disgusting. ... We've been together almost five years but I've known him for 18 years, and I kept forgetting who he was."

  • Molly Shannon – September 16 26 of 31
    Celebrities Turning 50 in 2014

I look at actress Molly Shannon and I think, yup, that is EXACTLY how I imagine I will behave at 50.

  • Janeane Garofalo – September 28 27 of 31
    Celebrities Turning 50 in 2014

The ENTIRE basis for the creation of this list hinges on Janeane. Because OMG. This was a total shock to me. I know I keep seeing, "50! No big deal!" But there is something jaw on the floor about Janeane turning 50. Janeanne will be featured in the new Comedy Central show, Broad City which will debut on January 22nd. (Amy Poehler is a producer of the show.)

  • Calista Flockhart – November 11 28 of 31
    Celebrities Turning 50 in 2014

Calista always seems to be in the spotlight. When she was just starting out her career the media proclaimed her weight was too low. When she began her romance with Harrison Ford the media said the age difference was too much. This year the actress turns 50 — maybe it will be the age of respect.

  • Robin Givens – November 27 29 of 31
    Celebrities Turning 50 in 2014

I always think of Robin as Darlene from Head of the Class. Since then the actress has been busy with TV and film projects and she also recently published her memoir, Grace Will Lead Me Home.

  • Marisa Tomei – December 4 30 of 31
    Celebrities Turning 50 in 2014

Rumors were BIG early in 2013 about Marisa possibly being engaged to Logan Marshall Green, but she has continued to deny them. The star told ELLE magazine her tips for looking and feeling great by revealing her beauty secrets: "I drink a lot of water, and wash my face with Cetaphil, I use natural jojoba oil to moisturize but I do change moisturizers on and off. I usually stick to the basics."

  • Teri Hatcher – December 8 31 of 31
    Celebrities Turning 50 in 2014

Two years ago Teri made headlines by putting photos of herself on Facebook without any makeup. She told Oprah she used to use Botox but has been injection-free for a long time. "We're writing all these books about how to live to be 100. Are we going to be 100 because we can live to be 100 and still look 30?" Teri said sharing photos of herself liberated her.
