Ask women about their relationship with their sisters, and you will get a variety of answers. Some will immediately tell you how they are the best of friends, while others may sigh and simply offer up, “It’s complicated.” The first Sunday in August is “Sisters’ Day.” I have a biological sister and categorical sisters (through friendship), and I will think of all of them this Sunday. There are no shortages of celebrity sisters either, so Hollywood won’t escape from this awkward family holiday.
One of the more interesting stories of celebrity sisters will always be the rivalry between Joan Fontaine and Olivia de Havilland. These two Academy Award-winning actresses are both well into their nineties and they have been feuding for decades. What began as sibling rivalry morphed into career competition, and then eventually there was boyfriend nabbing and Hollywood backstabbing. Good times. Many have tried to help the sisters make amends, but not even the death of their mother could bring them together.
Not all celebrity sisters are feuding; many are actually working together in movies or TV shows or touring together in concerts. The Pointer Sisters had a couple of public family feuding moments after the tragic death of June Pointer, but they continue to make music and tour. Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen have come a long way from playing the same little girl on Full House, to spending quality time together as adults at New York Knicks games and working in fashion.
Will you be calling your sister this weekend?
