49 Fascinating Celebrity Sisters

Ask women about their relationship with their sisters, and you will get a variety of answers. Some will immediately tell you how they are the best of friends, while others may sigh and simply offer up, “It’s complicated.” The first Sunday in August is “Sisters’ Day.” I have a biological sister and categorical sisters (through friendship), and I will think of all of them this Sunday. There are no shortages of celebrity sisters either, so Hollywood won’t escape from this awkward family holiday.

One of the more interesting stories of celebrity sisters will always be the rivalry between Joan Fontaine and Olivia de Havilland. These two Academy Award-winning actresses are both well into their nineties and they have been feuding for decades. What began as sibling rivalry morphed into career competition, and then eventually there was boyfriend nabbing and Hollywood backstabbing. Good times. Many have tried to help the sisters make amends, but not even the death of their mother could bring them together.

Not all celebrity sisters are feuding; many are actually working together in movies or TV shows or touring together in concerts. The Pointer Sisters had a couple of public family feuding moments after the tragic death of June Pointer, but they continue to make music and tour. Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen have come a long way from playing the same little girl on Full House, to spending quality time together as adults at New York Knicks games and working in fashion.

Will you be calling your sister this weekend?

Zooey and Emily Deschanel are adorable. I have seen several interviews with both actresses and they always come across as friends, which is really refreshing. However, this could all be an alien plot as Zooey says her sister is from the planet Neptune and was sent here to destroy her.

Clearly Joan and Olivia are getting along in this photo. I'm sure Joan isn't squeezing Olivia's hand too tightly, and in no way is Olivia trying to pull Joan down into a body slam or anything. Nope. Um...

Dear Abby (Pauline Phillips) and Ann Landers ("Eppie" Lederer) were twins with great advice. They also dabbled into the occasional public feud. After Ann Landers died, her daughter shared some not so pleasant thoughts with CBS Evening News, regarding Ann's thoughts about Dear Abby. "My mother had told me and her inner circle that she thought the column was quite subpar." OUCH!

Piers Morgan interviewed Joan and Jackie in their first ever interview together in 2011. May all of our decolletages be this amazing.

Sisters Sara and Melissa Gilbert grew up in Hollywood and in the spotlight. Watching some of their recent interactions on The Talk is pretty enjoyable as you can see how much they care for each other. A few years ago Melissa was a guest on The Talk and co-host Sharon Osbourne asked her when she knew her sister was gay. Melissa says, "I took her to dinner when she was in her teens and I sat her down and I gave her this long speech about how much I love you and it doesn't matter and you're my darling and blah, blah, blah and you can tell me anything. And she looked and me and she said, 'I'm not gay.' And I was like, 'OK, whatever.'"

  • Dakota and Elle Fanning 23 of 23
    fanning

Dakota was the first of the Fanning sisters to become a star, but little sister Elle wasn't far behind. The two actresses both started their careers as children and every year they take on edgier and edgier projects. While Dakota is away at NYU, Elle is pining for her, sort of. "She is a nice older sister. But it's not like we always get along. Now that she's going to college, it's different. I went into her room at home in California, and all her clothes were gone! Her closet was empty! I don't get to go in there and steal clothes anymore. It's really strange."
