10 Grammy®-Nominated Songs — Critiqued by an 8-Year-Old

Most eight-year-olds aren’t listening to Rihanna, Robin Thicke, or Justin Timberlake, well, at least mine isn’t. She is far more obsessed with the soundtrack to Frozen, the Phineas and Ferb channel on Pandora, and family favorites like Brian Eno, Francois Hardy, and Stereo Total. But as she gets older, she is exposed more and more to popular culture, like the soundtrack to our collective daily lives from songs in commercials, to songs on the radio, to what is being played at Whole Foods.

This weekend the Grammy Awards® will celebrate the year’s best music. I sat down with my child and had her listen to a selection of the nominations for the best songs and asked for her feedback. Boy, did I learn a few things. Apparently she thinks modern pop music is “weird,” she doesn’t like “sad” songs, and she has a very clear idea of who she thinks should win.

Check out what my eight-year-old music critic thinks right here:

Nominated for Song of the Year

"The beginning is super sad. I don't know this song, but I kind of like it. It's pretty. But the song doesn't explain much except the lady who is singing it seems to like love a lot."

     Will it win? No.

Nominated for Song of the Year

"It's a really weird song and it doesn't make any sense; they are just saying a whole bunch of words. But if I had to guess, then this song is about not having everything you want and dreaming about the things you want really bad. The song is sorta pretty but isn't very poppy."

     Will it win? No.
