Ben Affleck Will Live on $1.50Dresden Shumaker
What is the significance of $1.50? For some of us it wouldn’t even get us our favorite morning coffee treat. It doesn’t pay for a gallon of gas and it won’t get you a ride on most public transit.
$1.50 is a small number that illustrates a big line: the poverty line.
The Global Poverty Project announced that several big names and personalities have committed to take the 2013 Live Below the Line challenge by living on $1.50 of food and drink for at least one day between April 29 – May 3 to raise awareness about extreme poverty.
Ben Affleck, Josh Groban, Sophia Bush, Hunter Biden, and husband and wife Cooking Channel personalities Debi Mazar and Gabriele Corcos will all be taking the challenge this year.
Josh Groban participated in last year’s Live Below the Line campaign and has signed on to do it again. He was so touched by the challenge in 2012 that he wrote a song on his new album inspired by Live Below the Line.
“Taking on this challenge last year was such a humbling experience for me, and I was so proud and heartened by my fans that joined me. I wanted to capture this in Below the Line, which was inspired by this experience. It’s amazing how much we take for granted not having to live in hunger, and I am honored to have been asked to help spread the word about this eye-opening campaign again this year.”
Live Below the Line aims to help people better empathize with the challenge that 1.4 billion people face. It also encourages those that sign up to the challenge to raise funds and support organizations doing life changing work around the world, including Opportunity International, World Food Program USA, Happy Hearts Fund, The ISIS Foundation, Eastern Congo Initiative, U.S. Fund for UNICEF, GVN Foundation, CARE, The Somaly Mam Foundation, Rainforest Foundation and Milaap.
Earlier this year actress, and new mom, Malin Akerman joined the Live Below the Line campaign and created a compelling PSA.
Could you live on $1.50 a day?
It will be interesting to see the commentary from these celebrities during the challenge. How do you work with so little to eat? How do you parent?
Disclosure: I have a personal connection to this cause as not too long ago my family was below the line. We have since pulled ourselves out of poverty but I will always strive to spotlight hunger and poverty issues as I have seen how swiftly worlds can crumble as well as how swiftly worlds can be rebuilt. I work with a great online group called The Mission List and through them I have joined this challenge and will be raising funds to support The World Food Program USA. You can get involved! Join the challenge!
