I had to get that out of the way quickly, because no way! This can’t be. Not Toni Tennille, and Daryl Dragon. No!
But, alas, People reports that Cathryn Antoinette Tennille, 73, filed for divorce on January 16, per the Prescott City, AZ., courthouse.
“Love Will Keep Us Together,” their smash 1975 no. 1 single that also won a Grammy® for Record of the Year, was one of my mom’s favorite songs. I was four years old when it was released and have very distinct memories of singing it all the time. It’s the perfect pop song — an upbeat duet that works for a mom and her daughter, or two people in love. Can’t really lose with this one.
Daryl suffers from tremors related to a disease similar to Parkinson’s disease. Toni had updated her blog, Toni’s Take, in 2011 about his health:
Keep good thoughts for Daryl. He IS very healthy, but the tremor is really affecting his lifestyle. He’s embarrassed to go out in public… to a restaurant, to the theatre, etc. I encourage him as much as I can, but he has to find his way. I feel certain that he will. Once again, thank you all for your interest. And remember to always Keep A Song of Joy Inside Your Heart.
Today, the front page of their website includes the following update:
Until Thursday, January 16th, 2014, when Toni Tennile met with a DIVORCE ATTORNEY, in Phoenix, AZ, everything relating to THE CAPTAIN & TENNILLE appeared to the public as them being the ideal model for a “rock-solid’ married pair. But almost all people naturally evolve over time, sometimes hidden feelings start to be uncovered when one may read, just a little more into (the popularized, substitute heading appearing just below), stating, for instance: `’MUSIC HAS KEPT THEM TOGETHER.”
Well yes, people evolve, and life changes, but it’s still nice to think that love can keep some people together forever, especially after 39 years of marriage. Here’s wishing The Captain — and Tennille — love and support as they end their personal partnership. We’ll always have their music.
