The Claymates almost made him the 2003 American Idol, but does Clay Aiken still have the support to win his bid for Congress? This morning the singer announced his run and launched the “Doorway” campaign. In a deeply personal video, Clay shares stories from his childhood of domestic violence and poverty. He says, “And if you only know the part of my story that begins with the golden ticket, something that still seems unbelievable to me even to this day, you might wonder what would qualify me to run.”
He continues to explain his dream has always been to teach and give hope. This morning he has been sharing part of his vision online through social media networks. His Twitter account is especially active:
For most Americans, there are no golden tickets — not like those on TV. We must increase opportunity: http://t.co/LXdJCIzLPn

Clay is seeking the Democratic nomination in North Carolina’s extremely Republican second congressional district. He is challenging Republican Rep. Renee Ellmers and is considered to be a long shot.
Being a long shot doesn’t seem to slow Clay down, though. Being the Not Winner in the 2003 American Idol competition could have stalled out his career (hi, Justin Guarini) but Clay seemed to launch into great success. I think the guy has some pretty amazing teflon qualities.
When Clay came out in 2008 he did so with such grace and yet there was a lot of boldness there. Nothing like being on the cover of a national magazine holding the baby you helped your best friend conceive with the words: “Yes, I’m Gay!” In the interview with People he explained the cover: “I cannot raise a child to lie or to hide things. I wasn’t raised that way, and I’m not going to raise a child to do that.”
I think it is great that Clay wants to dedicate his life to service and helping his community. Running for office isn’t a picnic or glamorous at all, and I suspect he knows this. His intentions seem clear and honorable and I wish his campaign much luck.
