We all say that we love our friends, no matter what…
But, a recent study in the US suggests that women are less likely to be buddies with their peers, if they think they are too promiscuous. The study by psychologists at Cornell University found that college-age women judge their fellow women negatively if they have had more than 20 partners. They deemed them ‘unsuitable for friendship.’
Yet, when men were asked to rate their likelihood of being buddies with other men who had a similar number of notches (20 plus) and those who didn’t- they showed no preference. That old double standard that woman face, well it seems to be alive and kicking! It got me thinking as to what I look for in my female friends. Do they all share a quality that I value more than any other? Do they have similar tastes to me? Do I judge them, and what they do in their lives, by the standards I set for myself?
I’d be lying if I said I never judged something a friend did: For example, I’ve lost count of the times I have told a buddy that they are making a mistake dating Mr Never-Gonna-Be-Right… And naturally I gravitate to those that share my sense of humor, who like similar activities, and are partial to a good cocktail… As for qualities, well, the top one above all is loyalty – folks that are there for me through thick and thin, and have my best interests at heart.
With that in mind, I picked 7 famous women whom I would love to count as my friends. They all have excellent qualities that they would bring to the table. See what you think. I’d love to know who your wish list of celebrity friends would be??
Jennifer Lawrence – Fun! 1 of 7
When did you first fall for Jennifer Lawrence? Was it after watching this clip? For such a young Oscar winner, Jen seems to have her feet planted firmly in the mud. She dated a Brit for ages (Nick Hoult) so I am sure she'd get my quirky sense of humor. Hearing her scoff at those that labelled her 'fat' was refreshing. She laughed in their faces. It takes a ballsy woman to not bow to peer pressure... Jen looks like the mate you could have the most fun with: whether going to the movies, eating pizza, throwing some moves on the dance floor or sinking cold beers in some forgotten little pub, Jen would have you in stitches. Down to earth, funny and self-effacing, Jen is the buddy you'd want to hang with.
Ellen – For great debate and chat 2 of 7
Apart from the fact that the best Oscar ceremony ever was hosted by her, I am simply in awe of her talent. Uber smart, insanely funny, and beyond gutsy to come out on TV, in her self-penned show Ellen, she is a total inspiration. And, she has amazing taste in home décor. Have you SEEN any of her luxurious cribs? Man, imagine the dinner parties she and Portia have? They'd be a gas. In short, I love her. Ellen, if you're reading, I make a great friend. I remember birthdays and everything.
Jennifer Aniston – Loyalty 3 of 7
Who on earth wouldn't want to be bezzies with Jen? The woman is pure class. She refuses to be drawn into THAT triangle, she is resolutely positive - even when she has packs of hungry paps on her back, shoving cameras in her face. We all know she had her heart broken by the handsome prince of Hollywood, but our Jen bounced back. She is marrying a man with the sexiest (and slightly scary) eyebrows, she looks like she'd be great fun, and most importantly of all - she remains true to all her girlfriends. Jen seems loyal to a T. So Jen, if you want to wing a wedding invite my way....
Joan Rivers – Will tell it to you straight! 4 of 7
Ok, so Joan is never gonna be that subtle friend that pretends you look good in that mini dress... She will always give it to you straight. Maybe even a tad bluntly. But at least you'll know where you stand. Life would never ever be dull if Joanie here was your friend. The one great thing about Ms Rivers is that although she may take the mickey out of you and everyone else you know - at least she can also laugh at herself. And you'd be right there beside her, laughing until you cried.
Adele – Drinking buddy! 5 of 7
Why do I love Adele so much? Let me count the ways... Well, she refuses to become teeny tiny - being proud of her womanly curves: "I like having my hair and face done, but I'm not gonna lose weight just because someone tells me to. I make music to be a musician, not to be on the cover of Playboy." Thank you very much.
Also, she has the best laugh in the universe - fact. It is more of a cackle actually. She looks like she'd be the first to buy a round and the last to leave the pub. Oh to be buddies with her...
Oprah – Shoulder to cry on 6 of 7
So you know when you have that dating issue? Or your marriage is suffering? You don't know which way to turn in your career or you kids are driving you up the wall? Never fear, because you would have the angel that is Oprah, as a shoulder to cry on. Imagine how ACE that would be? You'd never put a foot wrong in life again! Even LOOKING at Oprah makes me feel calmer. A self-made billionaire, this amazing philanthropist is nothing short of a saint. A woman's woman, Oprah would keep your feet firmly on the ground - that is when she wasn't taking you for a spin in her private jet. Amazing.
Drew Barrymore – To champion you 7 of 7
I once had the pleasure of interviewing Drew - for all of about 4 minutes. She was gracious, sweet, and charming. I fell in love immediately. The ultimate gals' gal, Drew has been besties with Cameron Diaz forever, which is proof that in the land where friendships last as long as the movie is out - Drew is the exception to the rule. A hippie at heart, Drew would be all calming and supportive - bigging you up and seeing you through all of life's strife. Drew's been there, got the T-shirt, and recycled it. I reckons she would be a master of advice in all matters of the heart. She looks like she'd be up for a laugh and I love that she refused to be pressured into losing baby weight. If only Drew had been at my happy-clappy toddler classes, I would've had much more fun.
