Occasionally he gives interviews so candid his oldest daughter, Maya 15, begs him to consider her feelings!
I wonder what she thinks about this one then.
In the recent issue of Mr. Porter, Ethan, who is staring in the Lincoln Center production of Macbeth, shared his recollections of meeting Uma Thurman — his first wife and Maya’s mom — on the set of Gattaca.
“We fell madly in love and wanted to do all that,” he said.
After their relationship ended, he married Ryan Shawhughes, who once worked as their nanny.
Suffice it to say, it’s complicated.
And so are his thoughts on relationships and marriage as he lays them out in the same interview.
“People have such a childish view of monogamy and fidelity,” he says. “He’s cheated so he’s bad, she’s cheated so she’s bad, as opposed to a recognition that our species is not monogamous … My relationship with my present wife is thrilling to me and I’m committed to it,” he adds, “but neither she nor I know what shape the future will come in. Sexual fidelity can’t be the whole thing you hang your relationship on.”
Hmmm. Let’s hope Maya doesn’t read Mr. Porter too often.
