Awesome News! Fred Armisen Will Be Seth Meyers’ Band Leader

Seth Meyers is stepping in to host Jimmy Fallon’s Late Night and he’s bringing SNL buddy Fred Armisen along as his band leader.

Armisen, who stars with Carrie Brownstein in the hilarious Portlandia, is an avid music fan and accomplished musician. He’ll lead the 8G Band that will back Seth Meyers on his late-night talk show.

Meyers tweeted a photo of the band along with the explanation, “Fred will curate and lead the band, and continue to run it even when he’s off shooting Portlandia.

Very cool.

The band leader gig is a sweet one. Talk show hosts rely on the band leader as a sort of side kick. Johnny Carson’s Doc Severinson played straight man to Johnny but Ed McMahon still filled the primary sidekick role. David Letterman changed up his late show by relying on Paul Schaeffer to bounce jokes off of and Jimmy Fallon brought music even more to the foreground of his show by incorporating it in some of his most popular bits — like History of Rap with Justin Timberlake and Slow Jamming the news.

Choosing an aficionado like Fred Armisen as band leader means there will be lots of good and funny stuff in store. I am so excited because I love Fred, and I think he’s best when he’s riffing on the music industry whether he’s competing in Battle of the Gentle Bands, surprising and advising Kings of Leon, or Dreaming of the ’90s (1890s).

As if the sweet and funny Seth Meyers weren’t enough to get me to stay up late for Late Night, now Fred Armisen is the new Questlove! This is fantastic news.
