Futurama is Cancelled Again

Before season 7 of Futurama has even begun it is doomed. Comedy Central announced this morning that after resurrecting the series from the dead in 2009 it will not be renewing the animated comedy – again. The premiere will be on June 19 and the show will say farewell on September 4th. The cartoon is a favorite of many nerdy parents (after the kids have gone to bed).

The New York Times reports that Dave Bernath, the executive vice president of program strategy and multiprogramming has said, “Having the opportunity to bring ‘Futurama’ back for 52 episodes over these last four years has been a thrill for all of us at Comedy Central. The upcoming season promises to be the best final season of ‘Futurama’ yet.”

Futurama is a show about a NYC pizza delivery guy that accidentally gets frozen for one thousand years. When he thaws he is, obviously in the future. One of the things that is so great about the show is its fantastic use of guest stars. Since cryopreservation is a theme many guest stars appeared as simply heads in jars.

However this may not be the last you hear of Futurama. According to an interview in Entertainment Weekly the producers are not looking for a fat lady to sing.

Groening tells EW, “We’re catching our breath and seeing what the fans have to say. The experience of this show has been so much fun from the very beginning to now — everybody is so happy to work on this show — that it’d be a shame if we all went our separate ways… We would love to continue. We have many more stories to tell. But if we don’t, this is a really great way to go out… I think these episodes are the best ones we’ve ever done.”
