Gloria Steinem, the voice and face of feminism through the 60s and 70s, turns 79 today. Happy Birthday, Ms. Steinem!
In honor of Gloria Steinem and all the talented, outspoken leaders of the women’s movement, you might want to take a look at the PBS documentary, Makers: Women Who Make America.
It’s fascinating and compelling to watch. I have always identified strongly as a feminist. But something strange is happening. Women in their 20s think feminism is old-fashioned, over. They think it’s a non-issue. Women “won” their rights so now we don’t have to talk about it anymore.
Feminists are the new suffragettes.
Now we see a feminist backlash of women who don’t want it all. Who has time for it all? In fact, in Makers, Betty Friedan’s daughter criticizes the women’s movement for setting her up for failure by not telling her how hard “having it all” was going to be.
Different strokes for different folks. One thing is for sure, Gloria Steinem would love (and hate!) mommy blogs!
