If Only My Kids Would Follow Tim Gunn’s Golden Rules

As the Project Runway season finale on April 11 approaches and the last few designers are whittled away, you might want to review Tim Gunn’s Golden Rules: Life’s Little Lessons for Making it Work.

Tim Gunn’s down-to-earth guidelines aren’t just for people in the fashion industry. If everyone followed Tim’s 18 rules, the world would be a classier place. My kids, especially, could learn a thing or two from the make-it-work master.

  • Rule 1: Make it Work 2 of 19
    Rule 1: Make it Work
Kids ought to learn how to make do. No gold fish crackers? Make that snack work with saltines!
  • Rule 2: The World Owes You Nothing 3 of 19
Rule 2: The World Owes You Nothing
Who else is sick of entitled teenagers? Kids should earn their way in this world, bless their hearts.
  • Rule 3: Take the High Road 4 of 19
Rule 3: Take the High Road
Yeah, kids—take the high road, like I have every freaking day since the moment you were born.
  • Rule 4: Don’t Abuse Your Power—Or Surrender It 5 of 19
Rule 4: Don't Abuse Your Power—Or Surrender It
Big brothers and big sisters ought to take this to heart!
  • Rule 5: Get Inspired if it Kills You 6 of 19
Rule 5: Get Inspired if it Kills You
Alternatively: Get inspired even if cleaning up the mess you leave kills your mother. Creativity is a biggie!
  • Rule 6: Never Underestimate Karma 7 of 19
    Rule 6: Never Underestimate Karma
What goes around comes around . . . do unto others as you would have others do unto you. . . you know the drill. BE NICE!
  • Rule 7: Niceties are Nice 8 of 19
    Rule 7: Niceties are Nice
Please, thank you, and "Is there anything I can help with?" with take you far. So will NOT burping the alphabet.
  • Rule 8: Physical Comfort Is Overrated 9 of 19
Rule 8: Physical Comfort Is Overrated
My daughter's shoes are either too lose, too tight, too itchy, or too "cranky." Give me a break, kid. Listen to your Uncle Tim.
  • Rule 9: There’s Always Another Side to the Story 10 of 19
Rule 9: There's Always Another Side to the Story
Tim is famous and beloved for being fair-minded so for pete's sake, try to see it from your sister's point of view!
  • Rule 10: Be a Good Guest or Stay Home 11 of 19
Rule 10: Be a Good Guest or Stay Home
    Preach, Tim Gunn.
  • Rule 11: Use Technology; Don’t Let It Use You 12 of 19
Rule 11: Use Technology; Don't Let It Use You
No need to fight against technology. No need to stare at a screen for 10 hours a day, either. Now, mama's got to check her Facebook. Ahem.
  • Rule 12: Don’t Lose Your Sense of Smell 13 of 19
Rule 12: Don't Lose Your Sense of Smell
In an industry where suck-ups are a dime a dozen, Tim Gunn says to never yield your good judgement. For kids, this works on a more literal level as well.
  • Rule 13: Know What to Take to the Grave 14 of 19
Rule 13: Know What to Take to the Grave
Tim is fun and knows how to dish, but he keeps serious confidences too. Kids? They don't know when to text it and when to vault it. Teach them.
  • Rule 14 When In Rome. . . 15 of 19
    Rule 14 When In Rome. . .
Tim's up for new experiences but he says, "When in Rome, I still wouldn't eat monkey brains." Some behavior is not worth adopting.
  • Rule 15: When You Need Help, Get It 16 of 19
Rule 15: When You Need Help, Get It
There's no shame in getting a little help from a friend. Of course, if you're a contestant on Project Runway it might be called "cheating." Nevertheless, ask for help when you need it.
  • Rule 16: Take Risks 17 of 19
    Rule 16: Take Risks
I may keep this rule to myself. (Tim doesn't have kids.)
  • Rule 17: Give Back but Know Your Limits 18 of 19
Rule 17: Give Back but Know Your Limits
This one is good for kids, and GREAT for moms. There's big pressure to sign up, volunteer, and chaperone everything going on in your kids' lives. Do what you can, but overextending yourself can leave mommy feeling burned out.
  • Rule 18: Carry On 19 of 19
    Rule 18: Carry On
This may be the most important advice my kids could learn from Tim Gunn: Persevere! Move forward! Keep going! Plug away! Stick with it! And if they start to hear Tim Gunn's voice in their head along with mine? I can live with that.
