McCarthy is also well-known for her beliefs about links between vaccinations and autism that meet with much controversy and disagreement in parenting and healthcare communities. Her 11-year-old son, Evan, is autistic.
Jenny McCarthy will fill one of the open slots left by departing co-hosts Joy Behar and Elisabeth Hasselbeck.
Barbara Walters was thrilled about the new hire:
“We are delighted that Jenny will be joining us as a permanent co-host on The View starting in September. Jenny brings us intelligence as well as warmth and humor,” she said. “She can be serious and outrageous. She has connected with our audience and offers a fresh point of view. Jenny will be a great addition to the show as we usher in an exciting new chapter for The View.”
Barbara’s positive point of view is counteracted by considerable negative public feedback about the choice of McCarthy as a host, given her beliefs about vaccines and autism. The View hosts who are on their way out are certainly not known for being apolitical either, or lacking positions on controversial topics of all kinds. Behar is never shy with an opinion, whether it’s about Jessica Simpson’s pregnancy weight gain or Bill O’Reilly’s views, which prompted her to walk off the set during his appearance a few years ago. Hasselbeck’s right wing political views — she is leaving the program to join Fox & Friends as a host — have caused controversy among the program’s hosts, most famously in her blowup with former host Rosie O’Donnell, and strong reactions from the show’s viewers.
Controversy or no, Jenny McCarthy was nothing but upbeat in a statement about her new job:
“I’m beyond thrilled to be joining Barbara and the other amazing women at the table. I’d like to thank ABC for this great opportunity. I’d also like to give a big thank you to Vh1 for their support and for allowing me to fulfill this lifelong dream. I look forward to helping make hot topics a little bit hotter, and showing my mom that my interrupting skills have finally paid off.”
