What a summer Kanye’s having. His baby’s born, his album drops, and his first capsule collection for A.P.C. sells out so fast the French retailer’s website crashes.
When Kanye told The New York Times that he was the nucleus and that he had his finger on the pulse of, well, everything, it seemed a tad grandiose.
But he sure does seem to know what people want — from more Kardashians to fawn over, to $120 white t-shirts.
His previous attempts at fashion design were not exactly major successes. The DW Kanye West line he debuted in Paris back in 2011 prompted editors to instruct him not to quit his day job. The pieces never made it to the racks.
He’s done better with footwear. His Air Yeezy Nike line does so well there’s a healthy secondary market on eBay. The ropey stilettos he created with Giuseppe Zanotti were sold at Colette.
Perhaps menswear is where Kanye will find his game. This modest collection — 7 pieces! — looks like a bunch of faded jeans and your basic weekend-wear to me. But A.P.C. has already promised restocking to quell the masses waving their credit cards.
