Glee star Lea Michele has opened up about her relationship with her late boyfriend Corey Monteith. Speaking to Glamour magazine, the actress said: “We talked about a lot of things. We talked about children and what we would look like when we grew old and who would be fat and how we would stay thin. We talked about where we wanted to go and what we wanted to do.”
Monteith tragically passed away of a drug overdose in July last year. What is especially poignant about the interview is that it is obvious Lea felt she had found her soulmate. “We were done. We were it. When you’re at that place in your life with someone, you talk about everything.”
We’ve all been in that moment with someone — where you stay up late talking about where you’ll live, how cute your kids will be, who’ll do the gardening and shopping, and what holidays you’ll celebrate. Now imagine that person being ripped away from you, along with all of your future plans. After all, Lea was only 26 when Cory died (and he was only 31). It’s an incredibly young age to have to deal with the death of a partner — in essence, to be widowed.
So how did Lea cope? She has previously discussed how she moved into Kate Hudson’s guest house in the immediate aftermath of his death, for space and privacy. But it turns out, her savior has been yoga. “At the start, it’s hard because you’re so physically and mentally shocked and damaged, but after a while you get tired of physically feeling so horrendous, so I started doing yoga, which really helped,” she said. “Then gradually your mind catches up with your body.”
It has been less than a year since Cory passed away, but Lea has thrown herself into work projects — going back to Glee and releasing the first single of her new album Louder (which is out today). She added, “Now I feel a little bit more back together and I have this blank canvas in front of me, which is what my life can be. There’s something sad about that but also something good, because I will take that blank canvas and make something beautiful out of it.”
The 27-year-old singer sounds incredibly positive, considering what she has been through. Bravely she looks back on her relationship and now says, “But today I feel like I was given the best part of Cory, and I’m thankful for that.”
