The BBC has confirmed that Matt Smith, the 11th Doctor, will leave the show after filming the 2013 Christmas special.
Matt Smith endeared himself to us after the much-loved 10th doctor, David Tennant, said goodbye to the TARDIS in 2009.
In a delicious bit of timey-wimey funkiness, David Tennant met the 5th Doctor’s actual doctor filming on the set of Doctor Who in an episode called The Doctor’s Daughter. Tennant fell in love with his on-screen daughter and married—in real life—Georgia Moffett, The 5th doctor’s daughter.
That’s a tough act to follow.
But Matt Smith followed, well, regenerated (Time Lords don’t die, they regenerate) bravely and won his way into Whovians’ hearts with his bow ties, fresh face, and the occasional fez. He infused the series with energy and whimsy right when we were missing the energy and whimsy of the 10th doctor.
I have my kids to thank for getting me into the Doctor Who series. It’s a fun show to watch and talk about with the whole family. If you’re looking for something good to watch this summer, all the old seasons are available on Netflix. Try some classic Who, if your kids will sit through black and white, and then work your way up to the reboot of the series in 2005 with the 9th Doctor and one Rose Tyler. Unforgettable Rose Tyler. Sigh.
Here’s how we said goodbye to David Tennant and hello to Matt Smith. It’s always sad to see them go. Who’s your favorite doctor?
