The stars have not been photographed together since April 22nd. They’ve vacationed separately with their two children, Dylan, 13, and Carys, 10. They’ve actually been apart since last May, according to People magazine, when Michael returned from promoting Behind the Candelabra at the Cannes Film Festival.
“Catherine and Michael are taking some time apart to evaluate and work on their marriage,” says a rep for the actress. And for some reason, even though a decade in Hollywood is certainly a lifetime, this particular breakup makes me sad.
I liked the idea of them together. I’m not really sure why. They seemed like a couple who kept up a real life. They lived in Westchester, New York instead of LA. They didn’t parade their kids around for photo ops. They have the same birthday. Don’t ask me how I retain such information, but I always thought that was sweet.
I guess their breakup — or separation, really, no divorce has been filed — just underscores the fact that you never know what goes on in a marriage, especially a Hollywood marriage. But even for the most grounded folks, what they’ve been dealing with over the past few years could not have been easy.
Michael’s throat cancer in 2010. Catherine’s treatment for bipolar II disorder in 2011. Michael’s oldest son Cameron serving a drug sentence. According to E!, Catherine was extremely upset about Michael’s explanation that he got throat cancer as a result of the HPV virus from oral sex.
It’s worth noting that they reportedly renewed their vows back in 2010. It’s also worth nothing that just recently, Michael revealed that his one regret in life was not ending his 23-year-long marriage to first wife Diandra sooner than he did.
