Nick Cannon Stamps Out HungerDresden Shumaker
Nick Cannon joins our list of celebrities that we salute for shining a spotlight on serious issues. For the third year in a row, Nick, who is a member of the Feeding America Entertainment Council, has teamed up with the National Association of Letter Carriers and Feeding America for the 21st annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive, the nation’s largest single-day food drive, taking place on Saturday, May 11, 2013.
In 2012, letter carriers collected food donations from 10,000 communities, helping to put millions of meals on the tables of Americans in need. Last year’s drive also marked the ninth consecutive year that people donated more than 70 million pounds of food to the Stamp Out Hunger food drive. But, with more than 50 million people, including nearly 17 million children, facing hunger in America the fight for hunger relief continues.
Nick has often discussed that hunger relief particularly hits home with him as a cause to support because, as a child, he knew what it felt like to not know where his next meal would come from. Cannon and his mother visited food pantries from time-to-time when Cannon was a young child.
In a post that Nick wrote two years ago when he first began his work with Feeding America he shares, “I realize that right now, a lot of parents in this country are struggling to give their kids even the most basic necessities of life — such as food. I think back to my own childhood, when we sometimes had to visit food banks to get food on our table. I know firsthand what it feels like to have to overcome the feelings of inadequacy, embarrassment and shame and ask for help. It’s one of the hardest things anyone will ever have to face.”
This Saturday you can help stamp out hunger. It’s easy to help! Simply leave a bag of non-perishable food items next to your mailbox on Saturday, May 11, and your letter carrier will do the rest, delivering food to Feeding America food banks and agencies across the country.
Suggestions for donations are: non-perishable food items like canned soup, peanut butter, canned fruits and vegetables, and cereal.
