One Giant Leap For Reality TV: Winner Gets a Ticket to Space!Dresden Shumaker
The prizes on reality competition game shows have come a long way since the pocketbooks stuffed with cash on Let’s Make a Deal. If you are currently a contestant on a reality TV show and last until the final episode you could seriously win some bank.
Past Prize packages for winners on reality TV games:
Big Brother: $500,000
American Idol: $350,000
Project Runway: $500,000
So You Think You Can Dance: $250,000
Biggest Loser: $250,000
The Apprentice: $250,000
Some of these wins also come with major bragging rights, record deals, or job opportunities. However, a new NBC reality show is about to surpass all of these prizes, with a prize beyond our wildest dreams: a ticket to space.
Mark Burnett, king of creating reality TV shows, has partnered with Sir Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Galactic. Together they have created Space Race, which the LA Times is reporting will be “a competition series that would send the winner up in SpaceShipTwo, a commercial space-travel service from Branson’s Virgin Galactic.” NBC has joined forces with Burnett and Branson giving this rocket show some fuel.
Burnett shares, “For the past 10 years I have relentlessly pursued my dream of using a TV show to give an everyday person the chance to experience the black sky of space and look down upon mother Earth.” He went on to say in a statement, “I am thrilled to be part of a series that will give the everyday person a chance to see space, and that NBC has come on board too, so that viewers at home will have a first class seat.”
For his part in creating a golden ticket to space, Sir Richard Branson says, “Virgin Galactic’s mission is to democratize space, eventually making commercial space travel affordable and accessible to all.”
Paul Telegdy, President of Alternative and Late Night Programming at NBC Entertainment, is just about as giddy about this show as you could imagine. “The scope of this endeavor is so staggering, that it took these two titans to even imagine it. The term trip of a lifetime’ has for once been delivered on! This will be a remarkable experience for anyone who has looked at the night’s sky and dared to dream of space flight.”
I can’t imagine what the call for contestants will look like. Will everyone have to be a pilot? Will everyone have to be a specific height or weight in order to fit into the Galactic? And what will the weekly challenges be: questions about space or physical challenges? Will it be like Space Camp?
To get us excited about what’s to come the team at Virgin Galactic put together something to whet our space-loving appetites. We will not all win the ticket to space – but we will be able to experience the ride.
