Besties! Our 10 Favorite Friendships from TV and Film

Friendship Day is this Sunday, and while it’s always fun to watch the “will they, won’t they” romantic couples come and go, nothing gets you in the feels quite like watching your favorite platonic best friends solve a crime, go on an adventure, or pitch a show about nothing.

So, when the road looks rough ahead and you’re miles and miles from your nice warm bed, you just remember what your old pal said: you’ve got a friend in me.

May you have (and be) a friend as brave as Buzz, as loyal as Chewy, and as good at brewing potions as Hermione Granger. Viva la Friendship!

  • Sherlock Holmes and John Watson 2 of 11

Sherlock and Watson have one thing in common: Curiosity. Together, they use their various quirks, strengths, and weaknesses to solve crime. But mostly they just don't want to get bored. I'm more jealous of their relationship than anyone's relationship in real life. I always fancied myself a Watson-type. Who am I kidding? I'd be thrilled to be their Mrs. Hudson.

Prequel, sequel, cartoon, video game, Lego, action figures — it doesn't matter which incarnation of the Star Wars franchise you are dealing with, Han and Chewy are always on the same team. Their friendship knows no bounds of language or species. They've got each others' backs. Han + Chewy = the original bromance.

Like many friendships, Woody and Buzz started out with a little bit of jealousy. But Woody's jealousy of Buzz quickly turned into respect, and they've made a great team ever since. In fact, there's not much these two partners can't do together.

While it is true that two members of this threesome did eventually fall in love with each other, during their formative years these three were the best of friends. Hermione, Ron, and Harry each had different strengths, and together they were much greater than the sum of their magical parts.

  • George, Jerry, Elaine, and Kramer 6 of 11
    seinfeld

George, Jerry, Elaine, and Kramer might not call themselves "best friends." Plenty of other people came and went in their lives. But those people — close talkers, over-laughers, and the lot — were only there to provide endless conversation material for the Seinfeld gang at Monk's Cafe.

  • Laverne and Shirley 7 of 11
    laverne

Laverne and Shirley were total besties. They worked together, lived together, ran around with Lenny and Squiggy together, and had all sorts of madcap fun in general. So let's raise a glass in honor of these BFFs. (Make mine a milk and Pepsi.)

  • Mister Spock and Captain Kirk 8 of 11

One is logical, the other impetuous, but together they somehow make it work. These pals sometimes rub each other the wrong way, but they always bring out the best in each other. And if Spock's cool exterior leaves you guessing how he really feels about Kirk, he puts it plainly: "I have been — and always shall be — your friend."

Sometimes when a mom tries to be her daughter's best friend, you get the "I'm a cool mom!" scenario, like in Mean Girls. But the Gilmore girls are different. Mother and daughter and true best friends, Lorelei and Rory's relationship is special, rare, and great.

Who could hope for a truer friend than Samwise Gamgee? This stouthearted hobbit helped Frodo carry the ring to Mordor. The fate of the world rested on these two little buddies. Together, they faced danger and fought evil and always made time for elevenses.
