Our Favorite Night: Movie Night

Thanks to Dish and The Disney Channel for sponsoring this post. Click here to see more of the discussion.

Once upon a time there lived a family who had multiple schedules to manage. This family was often rushing out the door in the morning and arriving home at various times in the evening. The youngest one had grooming needs many evenings to rid him of odors acquired from his busy day of outdoor play, and the eldest one often had meetings in other townships late into the night.

The family loved to spend time with each other and they decided to make it a priority one evening a week. This evening was dubbed: Movie Night.

Like many families across the world we hold movie night in VERY high esteem. We rarely all go out to a movie together in the theatre because our schedules are so different. A movie night at home allows us to start a movie when we want. It allows us to also stop or pause when we need.

Since we are Dish users we are able to search through new releases On Demand, as well as well-loved favorite shows and movies within the channel search. Having Dish also means having access to channels in more than one time zone. Being able to watch West coast Disney on East coast time is a really good thing.

Five Tips for creating a wonderful family movie night

Not every family is the same, but our needs seem to be pretty basic. Beyond the actual entertainment we need comfort and FOOD. What does your family need to enjoy movie night?

I am just going to admit it, we are popcorn SNOBS at our house. If there was an emergency we could make do with microwave popcorn, but it's just not the same. We like our popcorn popped on the stove. My Mother is in charge of popping the corn, and her trick for making it taste so great is to add a small spoon of butter to the oil as well as seasoned salt WHEN she adds the unpopped kernels of corn. She makes three bowls so that no one has to even consider sharing.

My son loves movie night as he gets to have a chocolate treat. We make banana and chocolate smoothies with protein powder for him to enjoy. Having a small cup of something sweet to go with his bowl of salty popcorn usually stops him from asking if we have any candy in the house.

  • Turn the light on 4 of 6

Good lighting is another requirement established by my son. We do NOT watch movies in the dark as that is considered "scary." Even if we are watching the silliest of silly shows, if the room is dark suddenly my son gets worried. Movie nights are all about everyone having a good time, so if having a lamp on helps him enjoy the show I am all for it.

  • Pause it 5 of 6

I am honestly very surprised that the pause button on our Dish remote is not worn down to a nub. We are constantly pausing shows and movies. Bathroom breaks, refreshment breaks, "I think I hear the mailman" breaks, "I need to ask you a question" breaks. I wish I could pause life as easily as I pause the TV.

Some families need great pillows or blankets, my son just needs a good lap. We usually don't watch a movie when it is super close to his bedtime, but a good story can tire you out. When that happens there is nothing better than a comfortable lap to rest on.
