10 Outrageously True Updates (and some rumors) from the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards

In 1984, Dan Aykroyd and Bette Midler hosted an award show for MTV at Radio City Music Hall. The big winner of the show was “You Might Think” by The Cars. Who would have thought, all of these years later, that the MTV Video Music Awards would still be one of the most anticipated events of the entertainment world?

Music is the thread that helps weave families and generations together. I know many of us will tune in this Sunday at 9pm and watch the MTV Video Music Awards with our family. I’ll watch it live with my mom and record it to share some parts with my son. I can’t imagine my mom will watch the show for long, but she doesn’t want to miss out on seeing Lady Gaga perform live. My son will get a kick out of any cool dance numbers that happen.

Every day something new and buzzy surfaces about this year’s show. Did you hear about Justin Timberlake? What about the Kanye tribute rumor? Do you think John and Katy will perform their duet?? We’ve started collecting the true updates — as well as the solid rumors — as we count down to the big show on MTV.

Will you be watching?

Updates (and some rumors) from MTV’s 2013 Video Music Awards:

  • The VMA’s will air this Sunday 1 of 11

Music! Videos! Live performances! What can we expect?

  • Robin Thicke is the warm up act! 2 of 11

Every year, MTV has a benefit concert for Lifebeat before the actual Video Music Awards ceremony begins. Lifebeat is the leading national nonprofit focused on educating America's youth (13-29) about HIV/AIDS prevention. This year, Robin Thicke will headline the benefit concert at New York's Terminal 5 on Friday night.

  • Guess who the host will be? 3 of 11
    no-host

For the fourth time in VMA history, the show will be hosted by ... NOBODY. Just like in 2004, 2007, and 2011, the show will be performance-based versus host banter-based. The New York Post is also reporting that in addition to musical performances, the show will focus on "surprise comedic moments." Now THAT sounds interesting! (and maybe just a small bit terrifying!)

  • Show opens with Gaga 4 of 11

Lady Gaga's new musical experience (album) Artpop will be released in November. "Applause," the first single off the album, will be performed for the first time at the VMA's this Sunday, and the world is on the edge of their seat eager to see the new direction of this artist. Artpop is said to be unlike anything we have seen before, so I am betting this performance will be truly WOW.

  • Is Kanye planning a Trayvon Martin Tribute? 5 of 11
    kanye

Fake VMA posters have been showing up in Brooklyn illustrating Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman with the VMA logo and the VMA hashtag. BET was the first to ponder if this was less of a statement from MTV, and more of an indicator of a performance tribute from Kanye West. The style of the posters look a lot like the work of DONDA, the street artist used to illustrate Kanye's album Yeezus. MTV is denying any connection to the posters.

  • Rumor: NSync REUNION! 6 of 11
    nsync

It all started with a tweet (that has since been deleted) by a former MTV intern. The tweet hinted (STRONGLY) that when Justin Timberlake receives the Video Vanguard Award this Sunday evening, he will have some old school support in the form of his old 'NSync bandmates. The New York Post is sitting firm with the news, and based on that, Rolling Stone is proclaiming Justin is "apparently set to reunite." Bring it, boys!!

  • Surprise! Daft Punk performance plans leaked! 7 of 11
    daft-punk

Daft Punk was scheduled to perform on The Colbert Report last Tuesday, but when they bailed at the last minute, a very cranky Stephen Colbert spilled the beans about why the performers were missing. "Apparently, Daft Punk are going to make a surprise appearance on the MTV Video Music Awards. Don't tell anyone, because fun fact: No one told me until two hours ago."

  • Miley will be performing for first time 8 of 11
    miley

Miley is up for three VMA's, but her attendance at the show this year is a milestone as it will be the first time she has ever performed at the ceremony. According to the most recent buzz news from MTV, Miley has been doing nonstop twerk rehearsals with her "VMA Twerk Team."

  • Will there be a Katy/ John duet? 9 of 11
    katy-and-john

We know that Katy Perry is going to perform at the VMA's, but we also know this show likes to add surprises. She has been rehearsing what the Daily Mail has been dubbing a "West Side Story" homage performance. What we are wondering is if Katy and John will take to the stage together at some point?

  • One Direction is presenting 10 of 11
    one-direction

Not only are these super cute guys going to present, but they are also part of the first EVER Song of the Summer battle going on right now. "Best Song Ever" had over 2 million votes as of August 15th! Last year, One Direction was the definition of adorable on stage at the awards, so I'm excited they are a sure thing on stage as presenters this year. Remember how cute they were smooching Katy Perry?

  • First time in Brooklyn 11 of 11
    tickets

The group handling ticket prices for the live show has reduced ticket prices significantly. The Barclays Center in Brooklyn is a big venue, and a full audience will only make the show more exciting. This is the first year the show has been at Barclays Center and the first time, ever, an award show has been filmed in the borough of Brooklyn.
