Well, actually, it was Sir Patrick Stewart, 73, marrying his girlfriend, jazz singer Sunny Ozell, 35, his rep confirmed to People. The couple have been dating since 2009, when they met at a New York restaurant called Franny’s, where Ozell was a waitress.
And the officiant? Sir Ian McKellen — Gandalf’s alter ego, and also a good pal of Stewart’s. McKellen shared a photo of himself on Facebook last night, complete with a “Minister” t-shirt and a Doctor of Divinity diploma. The caption: “I did my part,” along with a link to Stewart’s wedding announcement tweet.
This is celebrity marriage communication in the Internet age, friends.
McKellen actually let the news of his minister gig out of the bag several months ago, saying on Britain’s Jonathan Ross Show that he’d be marrying Stewart and Ozell.
The Hollywood Reporter quoted McKellen: “I’m going to marry Patrick [Stewart.] I am going to officiate at his wedding… in Massachusetts, in the middle of America somewhere, you get a friend along, and I read out the words, and Sunny and Patrick will then be married … I’ve done it once before with two guys having a civil partnership. I was crying my eyes out.”
The Twitter pic Stewart shared features the couple more than neck-deep in a ball pit, such as one you’ll find at Chuck E. Cheese. Whether the actual ceremony took place in or around the pit is unclear — Stewart’s tweet simply says “Yes, married.” — but one thing is certain: the couple looks very happy! And I’m going to go out on a bold limb and say if you can start out married life grinning from ear-to-ear in a vat of plastic toy balls, things are looking pretty good.
