Quick: What is the first thing you think of when you think of Pharrell? Ok, AFTER the hat. You just smiled, didn’t you? You just got happy, right? Pharrell created the soundtrack to the most toe-tapping, chair-dancing, head-boppin, get up-and-glide emotion we all crave: happiness. It’s pretty amazing that the musician and producer, Pharrell Williams, has partnered with the United Nations Foundation to help spotlight the International Day of Happiness on March 20th.
Oh yes, happiness is GLOBAL.
This is only the second ever International Day of Happiness. It was established last year as an official United Nations Day that “recognizes the pursuit of happiness is a fundamental human goal and the need for a more inclusive, equitable and balanced approach to economic growth that promotes sustainable development, poverty eradication, happiness and the well-being of all peoples.”
Pharrell wants us to post photos and videos showing us being, well happy, as we jam out to “Happy,” his super successful song. Use the hashtag #HAPPYDAY and then register the submission at 24 Hours of Happiness. On March 20th Pharrell will give shout outs to his favorite submissions.
I love the idea behind International Day of Happiness. At our core, every single person on this planet desires and deserves happiness. The family next door is entitled to a happy dance moment as much as the family across the globe. The biggest difference is not all families in the world have the same opportunities.
It is powerful to know that as a core value the General Assembly of the United Nations believes in “the relevance of happiness and well-being as universal goals and aspirations in the lives of human beings around the world and the importance of their recognition in public policy objectives.”
And now there is a soundtrack to it.
I can not imagine how creative you need to be to get Pharrell’s attention for a shout-out. After watching parts of his 24 Hour Happy Project, I am just amazed by this man. Seriously amazed. What is also amazing is that I have yet to get sick of this song.
There’s something special about songs about happiness. “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” and “Get Happy” are potent and somehow magical ear worms. Pharrell’s “Happy” is music that makes us grin, and maybe it will make some of us advocate and act. Pharrell has used the song to unite the world in a happy dance. Oh #HappyDay (see what I did there?).
