Prince to Appear on New Girl, Plus 14 Other Musicians Who Were TV Guest Stars

Prince_at_CoachellaWord is out that Prince is set to appear on the New Girl episode immediately following the Super Bowl on Fox, February 2, 2014. If you already have your fresh 2014 calendar ready to be filled in, this will make an excellent first entertainment entry.

Prince has never appeared on a network television series, so his appearance on New Girl is a career first for him, and it’s also a big score for TV, quite frankly. (Sorry, TV. It has to be said.) Word is that he loves the show and asked to appear in it. It seems a Princely activity to kick back and watch TV at this point. Being a constantly evolving musical genius is tough work. A guy has to relax sometimes.

New Girl cast member Hannah Simone hinted on Wednesday that something big was afoot, and Prince’s official account retweeted it.

I can now add “Get retweeted by Prince” to my social media life list. (Yes, I have one. What?)

Tomorrow has come and gone, and I’m still waiting for a confirmation from Prince himself. Yes, this is because I’ve been a fan long enough to know that nothing happens in his world by mistake or by anyone’s clock but his own. The first and only time I saw him live was when he dropped into Dayton, Ohio for a show with maybe three days’ notice. I was lucky enough to be a plus-one for a friend who was paying attention and got tickets before they sold out. We were barely on the Internet then, so we actually must have heard about it on the radio. So I know where Prince is concerned, I simply must believe it when I see it.

Sources say that Prince will play himself and a potential love interest for Zooey Deschanel’s Jess, which is bad news for her boyfriend, Nick. I can see Prince as a Zooey Deschanel fan, and I can easily see her among his many female muses turned collaborators. She’s no Appolonia or Sheila E., but she makes her own music and always does her own thing, regardless of medium. It’s not a shock that Prince would be down with that.

If they sing together? Well, that’ll be a nice wintertime present. It’s worth paying attention, too, because it might turn out to be Prince’s only TV appearance ever … if he shows up. He never had to make a movie again, because, well, Purple Rain. Prince appearances are essentially like unicorns, is what I’m saying, so make sure you set your DVR if you want to hang onto this one when it happens.

Many musicians have popped up in TV land over the years, sometimes just to sing, other times to try their hand at acting. Let’s look at some of the most noteworthy.
