Put on Your Proton Pack — Ghostbusters Are Back!Dresden Shumaker
Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II are classics, and I will green slime anyone who begs to differ. I’ve shown clips of the film to my son and at nearly five years old, he doesn’t quite get their magical appeal. For a kid in the ’80s, they were movie gold. Comedy, ghosts, crude humor, silly songs, and a marketing campaign that was not to be ignored. I think children of the ’80s wax nostalgic about a lot of films that were released during our youth. Some of these films are sacred, and we would probably riot if they were not handled properly. (Goonies, I am looking at you.) But there are other films that are just ripe for a sequel, and a third Ghostbusters would be ectoplasmic!
Ivan Reitman was at the helm of both Ghostbusters, and for ages he has been hinting that a third was in the works. He even spent an entire press tour for another film answering questions about whether or not he thought Bill Murray would be game for a sequel. All Ivan would report was, “Bill Murray doesn’t hate the script.” Brilliant move in getting everyone talking about the possibilities. THERE’S A SCRIPT?!
Now there is big momentum for Ghostbusters III, but Ivan Reitman has just announced he will be stepping down as director. Earlier this year original ‘buster and friend to Ivan, Harold Ramis, passed away and Ivan decided to reduce his role with the relaunch of this franchise from director/producer to just producer. “It was such an amazing time in my life 30 years ago, and I felt that way on the second film. With Harold no longer with us I couldn’t see it.”
He spoke with Deadline and revealed some key information about the third film, mostly who wrote the script. Etan Cohen and Dan Aykroyd wrote the version that Sony will be pushing forward. Ivan shared, “It’s a version of Ghostbusters that has the originals in a very minor role.”
MTV has already started doing fantasy casting and they have some pretty clever ideas. I do take issue with how they are going about it though; we can’t ever replace these iconic characters with different actors. We just can’t. There can NEVER be another Peter Venkman or Egon Spengler. Nope.
It’s been decades since the last Ghostbusters film was released let’s take this up a notch!
What do you think will happen in Ghostbusters III?
