SAG Award Nominations Announced!

Earlier this morning the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) announced the nominations for the 20th SAG Awards. As we slowly make our way towards awards season, every nomination announcement whips Hollywood up into a frenzy of, “DOES THIS MEAN OSCAR?” One of the beautiful things about the SAG awards is that these are truly awards given by peers.

What I love about these nominations is they help me populate my “MUST GO SEE THIS” movie list I create for the holiday break. I try to see several movies a month, as child care and work schedules allow, but these nominations provide a honed in look at films I know I don’t want to miss.

These awards aren’t just for films, so don’t stress if the idea of leaving the comfort of your sofa for a multiplex seems bananas. SAG awards also honor outstanding performances in TV. Look at these nominations and see if there are any shows you have been missing out on or wondered about. Sometimes we just need a nudge to know something is worth our time and a SAG nomination for an actor in a show is a pretty fantastic endorsement.

Meanwhile the Los Angeles Times points out these nominations are indicating some clear front runners for potential Academy voters. Lee Daniels’ The Butler and 12 Years a Slave earned seven nominations between films. Susan King and Rene Lynch explain, “The films are hallmarks of an extraordinary year for black cinema, rich with critical acclaim and box-office success, and Wednesday’s nominations could signal more accolades to come and perhaps even Academy Award recognition.”

You can watch the SAG Awards live on January 18 at 5 p.m. PST on TBS and TNT. According to the SAG website, “A live stream of the SAG Awards can also be viewed online through the TBS and TNT websites, as well as through the Watch TBS and Watch TNT apps for iOS or Android.”

Look to see if your favorite actors got a nod.

  • Female Actor in a Comedy Series 2 of 11
    female-comedy-series

I am going to make a big confession, and I sincerely hope that you will not judge me too harshly: I do not actively watch any of these shows these actresses have been nominated in. I have seen and appreciated episodes, but I am sorely out of touch with comedy TV right now.

MAYIM BIALIK / Amy Farrah Fowler "THE BIG BANG THEORY" (CBS)

JULIE BOWEN / Claire Dunphy "MODERN FAMILY" (ABC)

EDIE FALCO / Jackie Peyton "NURSE JACKIE" (Showtime)

TINA FEY / Liz Lemon "30 ROCK" (NBC)

JULIA LOUIS-DREYFUS / Vice President Selina Meyer "VEEP" (HBO)

  • Male Actor in a Comedy Series 3 of 11
    male-actor-comedy

I am missing the boat on these comedies as well. I KNOW. I KNOW. Seriously. I missed the first season of Modern Family and then never found my way back in. In a reversed moment of behavior, I did manage to watch the first season of House of Lies, but missed the next season. I think Netflix was invented for people like me.

ALEC BALDWIN / Jack Donaghy "30 ROCK" (NBC)

JASON BATEMAN / Michael Bluth "ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT" (Netflix)

TY BURRELL / Phil Dunphy "MODERN FAMILY" (ABC)

DON CHEADLE / Martin "Marty" Kaan "HOUSE OF LIES" (Showtime)

JIM PARSONS / Sheldon Cooper "THE BIG BANG THEORY" (CBS)

  • Female Actor in a Drama Series 4 of 11

Well now, THIS is going to be an interesting category to watch on award's night!

CLAIRE DANES / Carrie Mathison "HOMELAND" (Showtime)

ANNA GUNN / Skyler White "BREAKING BAD" (AMC)

JESSICA LANGE / Fiona Goode "AMERICAN HORROR STORY: COVEN" (FX)

MAGGIE SMITH / Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham "DOWNTON ABBEY" (PBS)

KERRY WASHINGTON / Olivia Pope "SCANDAL" (ABC)

  • Male Actor in a Drama Series 5 of 11
    male-actor-drama-series

Something interesting to note here, not a single nominee is from a network show.

STEVE BUSCEMI / Enoch "Nucky" Thompson "BOARDWALK EMPIRE" (HBO)

BRYAN CRANSTON / Walter White "BREAKING BAD" (AMC)

JEFF DANIELS / Will McAvoy "THE NEWSROOM" (HBO)

PETER DINKLAGE / Tyrion Lannister "GAME OF THRONES" (HBO)

KEVIN SPACEY / Francis Underwood "HOUSE OF CARDS" (Netflix)

  • Actor in a TV Movie or Miniseries 6 of 11
    male-actor-miniseries

Wow, so SAG is pitting Matt and Michael against each other! I didn't see that one coming. I need to put The Hollow Crown on my "must-watch" list.

MATT DAMON / Scott Thorson "BEHIND THE CANDELABRA" (HBO)

MICHAEL DOUGLAS / Liberace "BEHIND THE CANDELABRA" (HBO)

ROB LOWE / John F. Kennedy "KILLING KENNEDY" (National Geographic Channel)

JEREMY IRONS / King Henry IV "THE HOLLOW CROWN" (WNET/Thirteen)

AL PACINO / Phil Spector "PHIL SPECTOR" (HBO)

  • Actresses in a TV Movie or Miniseries 7 of 11
    female-miniseries

Out of all of the nominees, this is the group I would most like to join at the table. (Holly and Elisabeth are also nominated for performances in the same miniseries.)

ANGELA BASSETT / Coretta Scott King "BETTY & CORETTA" (Lifetime)

HELENA BONHAM CARTER / Elizabeth Taylor "BURTON AND TAYLOR" (BBC America)

HOLLY HUNTER / G.J. "TOP OF THE LAKE" (Sundance Channel)

HELEN MIRREN / Linda Kenney Baden "PHIL SPECTOR" (HBO)

ELISABETH MOSS / Robin Griffin "TOP OF THE LAKE" (Sundance Channel)

  • Male Actor in a Supporting Role 8 of 11

Two big surprises for nominations in this category: Barkhad and James. Expect a lot of conversation about both of these men in the next couple of weeks. I have heard James Gandolfini's final performance in Enough Said is truly beautiful, and it is lovely that his fellow actors have nominated him posthumously.

BARKHAD ABDI / Muse "CAPTAIN PHILLIPS" (Columbia Pictures)

DANIEL BRÃœHL / Niki Lauda "RUSH" (Universal Pictures)

JAMES GANDOLFINI / Albert "ENOUGH SAID" (Fox Searchlight Pictures)

MICHAEL FASSBENDER / Edwin Epps "12 YEARS A SLAVE" (Fox Searchlight Pictures)

JARED LETO / Rayon "DALLAS BUYERS CLUB" (Focus Features)

Now we are getting into "films I really want to see" territory. Every single one of these movies is getting rave reviews and this is certainly a great category to be in!

JENNIFER LAWRENCE / Rosalyn Rosenfeld "AMERICAN HUSTLE" (Columbia Pictures)

LUPITA NYONG'O / Patsey "12 YEARS A SLAVE" (Fox Searchlight Pictures)

JULIA ROBERTS / Barbara Weston "AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY" (The Weinstein Company)

JUNE SQUIBB / Kate Grant "NEBRASKA" (Paramount Pictures)

OPRAH WINFREY / Gloria Gaines "LEE DANIELS' THE BUTLER" (The Weinstein Company)

  • Female Actor in a Leading Role 10 of 11
    female-actor-leading

Ok, I take it back. THIS is the table to sit at on SAG night! This nominee list is amazing. I have Philomena and August: Osage County at the top of my "must-see" list.

CATE BLANCHETT / Jasmine "BLUE JASMINE" (Sony Pictures Classics)

SANDRA BULLOCK / Ryan Stone "GRAVITY" (Warner Bros. Pictures)

JUDI DENCH / Philomena Lee "PHILOMENA" (The Weinstein Company)

MERYL STREEP / Violet Weston "AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY" (The Weinstein Company)

EMMA THOMPSON / P.L. Travers "SAVING MR. BANKS" (Walt Disney Pictures)

  • Male Actor in a Leading Role 11 of 11
    male-actor-leading

This category is the one to watch when you want to start thinking about early odds for Oscar. Chiwetel and Forrest are representing two films that are rumored to be the front runners for 2013.

BRUCE DERN / Woody Grant "NEBRASKA" (Paramount Pictures)

CHIWETEL EJIOFOR / Solomon Northup "12 YEARS A SLAVE" (Fox Searchlight Pictures)

TOM HANKS / Capt. Richard Phillips "CAPTAIN PHILLIPS" (Columbia Pictures)

MATTHEW McCONAUGHEY / Ron Woodroof "DALLAS BUYERS CLUB" (Focus Features)

FOREST WHITAKER / Cecil Gaines "LEE DANIELS' THE BUTLER" (The Weinstein Company)
