X Factor supremo Simon Cowell has become a father for the first time! His girlfriend Lauren Silverman gave birth on Valentine’s Day in New York to a healthy baby boy, weighing 6 lbs., 7 oz.
Cowell announced the birth on Twitter, saying “Very happy to say Eric was born at 17.45pm. Healthy and handsome.” Cowell went on to explain the choice of name, tweeting: “Named after Dad.” He was referring to his late father, Eric, who passed away from a heart attack in 1999 at the age of 81. Eric Selig Phillip Cowell had worked in the music industry as an executive, and Simon successfully followed in his footsteps.
Anther tweet from Cowell thanked everyone for their well wishes: “Lauren in great shape. Thanks for all of your kind messages.” Lauren had given birth at the Lenox Hill Hospital, where singer Beyonce gave birth to Blue Ivy. Rooms can cost up to $1,700 a night there. Cowell had been due at Britain’s Got Talent UK auditions but had flown back to New York to be by his girlfriend’s side. Lauren hadn’t been expected to give birth for another two weeks, but baby Eric made an appearance earlier than expected!
Cowell’s close friend, TV host Piers Morgan, tweeted his congratulations: “A young Simon Cowell with his father Eric, who he adored… lovely tribute to name his son after him.” Morgan uploaded a photo of Cowell with the father he adored. Congrats to Simon and Lauren!
