This made my uterus hurt. Not literally, but the idea that reality TV star and über-fertile Michelle Duggar — matriarch of the TLC reality series 19 Kids & Counting — is actually considering having baby number 20 does indeed give me chills. But then I had only one child and that almost killed me. Michelle Duggar is a totally different kind of woman. She is a baby-making machine. One who apparently:
a) Wants to set some kind of world record (but she’d be WAY off. That record goes to Mrs. Feodor Vassilyev [b. 1707–c.1782] who gave birth to 69 children).
b) Is addicted to being pregnant and giving birth (like this lady, who is a surrogate and says she won’t stop getting pregnant, “until my womb falls out.”)
c) Likes nice round numbers — 20 has a more soothing ring than 19.
d) Believes that it’s all part of “God’s plan.”
e) The Duggars have a media empire to run, and that business is based on making babies — lots and lots and lots of babies.
Maybe it’s a mix of all of the above? My only concern is that perhaps the Duggars want to have yet another baby to keep their show on the air and to keep in the public eye. If they didn’t continue to have children, or at the least talk about having children, their stock may drop. Having children for the sake of TV is a truly bad reason to procreate, but I doubt that is the main motive for adding another Duggar into the world.
“We would love more children if God saw fit to give us more, I just want to make sure that I am ready to catch a baby if that would happen,” Michelle Duggar said when seeing an OB-GYN in Little Rock, Arkansas. Oh, and it should be mentioned that Michelle Duggar is 47 years old and has had issues with her last two pregnancies. The Duggars’ nineteenth child, Josie, was born three months prematurely, and Michelle had a life-threatening bout of preeclampsia. Then Michelle was pregnant with baby number 20 back in 2011, but Michelle suffered a “devastating” miscarriage. And yet, here they are talking about the possibility of another pregnancy.
Yes, I know, I know — I am totally being a cynic, thinking that part of why they are doing this is for their brand. And if she does happen to become pregnant, will her body even be able to deal with it? That is a valid question. Ultimately, they’re probably considering another child because of their religious beliefs, which they have been very vocal about. When they first were married, Michelle was on the pill and blamed it for a miscarriage that she had. They then “agreed [they] would stop using any form of birth control and let God decide how many children [they] would have.” So if their God wants them to have an even 20 kids, they’ll have an even 20 and we all know it will be televised.
Do you think the Duggars are considering having another baby to keep their show on the air or are they just letting “God’s plan” play out?
