Your Kids Don't Like Reading? Toon Books are here to change thatKacy Faulconer
Toon Books is on a mission to get your kids hooked on reading. And you’ll fall in love with their books, too. The gorgeous, award-winning, comic/picture book hybrids are a treat to read with your children. But they’re also designed for early readers to read on their own!
They’ve got leveled comics for kids in Kindergarten to 3rd grade, and Graphic Novels for 3rd grade and up. The site is packed with educator tools, including lesson plans for teaching their books with Common Core Standards. It’s a gold mine for teachers and home-schoolers alike.
Toon Books is the brainchild of Francoise Mouly and Art Spiegelman. Gaaa! Total nerdal freakout. The Mouly/Spiegelmans are my favorite Pulitzer Prize winning New Yorker art editing couple in the comic book world. Art Spiegelman’s Maus I, II, and Meta Maus had a profound effect on me. And now he has authored the mischievously delightful children’s book, Jack and the Box, one of Toon Books’ cute hardcovers for ages 3 and up.
The Toon Book catalog features tons of other talented authors as well, the likes of Harry Bliss, Renee French, and Claude Ponti. These colorful comics may be just the thing to get reluctant readers more interested in books. You can preview all the books online, and many of them are available as a free iPhone App with the option to have books narrated in French, Spanish, Chinese, or Russian.
