Jesse Tyler Ferguson is off the market. He and his longtime boyfriend, attorney Justin Mikita, tied the knot last Saturday night in a New York City ceremony.
The marriage was officiated by friend and playwright Tony Kushner, a recent recipient of an Arts and Humanities Medal from the White House.
While the couple reside in Los Angeles, they decided to marry in New York. People magazine shared some of Jesse’s comments from a recent appearance on The View where he discussed why the couple opted for a New York wedding over a Los Angeles one. “It wasn’t legal in California up until yesterday. Weddings are expensive, y’all, and we wanted to give that money to a state that accepted us as an equal. We’re too far down the planning path to change.”
The wedding was held at 82 Mercer with approximately 200 guests. The 50,000 square foot space in SoHo has views of Broadway, and on the night of Jesse and Justin’s wedding there were many stars to be seen as well. Celebrity friends in attendance included Zachary Quinto, Isaac Mizrahi, Padma Lakshmi, Nigel Barker, Jerry O’Connell and Rebecca Romijn, and many Modern Family cast members.
The day after the wedding Justin tweeted, “Husband. Not partner. We’ve worked hard to call each other husband… so let’s start using it. K thanks.”
The happy couple asked friends to consider making donations to Tie the Knot, an organization that helps same sex couples get married, in lieu of gifting traditional wedding presents. Jesse and Justin will be working with Tie the Knot in August to “host” the first legal gay marriage in New Zealand. The event will happen in an airplane. Yes. In an airplane.
Congratulations to Jesse and Justin!
