What Happens After American Idol?

The 2013 cast of American Idol is down to the final seven performers. Nicki Minaj is currently in a twitter battle with Devin Velez, the most recently booted contestant over his assessment of her judging style. While Nicki Minaj is now considered one of the most controversial judges, producer Nigel Lythgoe, is telling everyone that if she wants to remain on the show she would be welcome.

But what happens AFTER American Idol? Where do these people go once the competition ends? The Daily Beast is in the midst of doing an extensive series of interviews. Their goal is to interview the top ten contestants from the first seven seasons of the show. Yes. SEVENTY interviews to find out, “what happened next?”

We never hear about many of these guys. Some get small gigs on TV or film while others find themselves in rehab, homeless, or just, simply, back to life as they knew it before Idol.

Crystal Bowersox, who was the runner up in the 9th season of Idol, stands out because she went through some pretty hard times before she graced the big stage on American Idol. She now joins the elite list of Idol performers that made it to Broadway. Crystal will star as Patsy Cline in August of this year in Always…Patsy Cline.

Jeff Cohen of Burke-Cohen Entertainment tells Playbill, “Crystal is the ideal performer to portray Patsy Cline. In what amounts to a ‘life-imitates-art’ twist, Patsy Cline was discovered on the ‘Arthur Godfrey Show,’ the number one TV talent show of its day. And Crystal was discovered on ‘American Idol,’ the number one TV talent show today.”

Crystal, her husband Brian Walker, and their 4-year-old son have been living in Portland, Oregon for almost two years. The family are trying to keep things normal. Well, as normal as possible for a rock star and soon to be Broadway star. They have sheep and chickens and Crystal knits.

Crystal recorded her just released new album, All That For This in a small Portland studio with local musicians. Oregon Live, the music scene arm of The Oregonian, calls the album, “a fantastic pop record, full of hooks, and heart, and centered on Bowersox’s voice.”

Crystal is not the first performer from American Idol that has added musical theatre to their resume. National tours and Broadway productions have been pulling talent from the show since its very first season.
