Where Do Oscar® Winners Keep Their Awards?

lupita oscarAfter the makeup has been scrubbed off, the gowns have been sent back and the congratulatory bouquets start arriving, the question remains … where will last night’s Academy Award® winners put their little golden man? Will Jared give it to his mom? (By the way, what a speech! I am officially in love with him!) Will Lupita put hers proudly on her mantlepiece? Will Matthew McConaughey put his in his kids’ playroom?

No one can sell their Oscar® (and really, who would want to?), as the Academy forbade that in 1950. There are stories of Oscars® being lost and stolen, and of course there is the odd take from Nicolas Cage about where his Oscar® ended up. His Best Actor award for Leaving Las Vegas in 1996 had been displayed in his movie room at his Los Angeles home. However when he began trying to establish residency in Louisiana, he told the media at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2009, “One of the ways they determine if you’re a resident is they ask you, ‘Where is your Academy Award?’ So it’s in a truck somewhere, moving through Louisiana.”

My favorite story about where a winner kept their Oscar® is that of Ordinary People winner Timothy Hutton (incidentally the youngest ever winner for Best Supporting Actor). Apparently Hutton was throwing a party a number of years ago. His sister popped the Oscar® in the fridge alongside the beers so that guests would happen upon it as they grabbed a refreshment. The statue is apparently still in there!

Congrats to all the winners!

  • Emma Thompson | In the Loo 1 of 8

Two-time Oscar® winner Emma Thompson (Lead Actress in Howard's End and Best Adapted Screenplay for Sense and Sensibility) keeps her awards in ... the loo! Thompson lives in West Hampstead in London, across the road from her mother, and she keeps both of her Oscars®  in the downstairs lavatory. Why? She says, "They look far too outré anywhere else. They're great big, gold, shiny things." And she isn't alone! Susan Sarandon, Lionel Richie, Kate Winslet, and Sean Connery all keep theirs in the bathroom, too!

  • Jennifer Lawrence | At Her Parent’s House 2 of 8

Jennifer Lawrence, who lost last night to Lupita but won for Silver Linings Playbook last year — famously tripping up the steps as she went to collect her award — keeps her Oscar® at her parent's home in Kentucky. Where? On top of the piano with all of her family's trophy collection. I am betting that her parents are the reason Jenn is so incredibly down to earth — if her Oscar® sits next to her brother's sporting trophies — all equal accomplishments. She isn't the only star to give her award to her parents. Nicole Kidman did the same, and Angelina Jolie originally gave her Girl, Interrupted Best Supporting Actress award to her late mother.

  • Tom Hanks | On the Family Trophy Shelf 3 of 8
    tom hanks oscar

Tom Hanks keeps his Best Actor awards, one each for Philadelphia and Forrest Gump, on the family trophy shelf alongside football trophies and an old World's Greatest Mom trophy. This down-to-earth attitude, where all of the family's accomplishments are held in equal esteem, is brilliant! Maybe this is why he is the nicest man in Hollywood?

  • Gwyneth Paltrow | Not on Display at All 4 of 8
    gwyneth oscar

THAT Speech! THAT dress! Who could forget Gwyneth's triumph in 1998 for Shakespeare in Love? It seems Gwyneth would like to forget that moment as she has her Oscar®  tucked away, not on display at all. "That thing freaks me out!" she says.

  • Reese Witherspoon | In Her Living Room 5 of 8

When Reese won her Oscar® for Walk the Line, she joked about wanting to transform the statue into a door knocker or a necklace (imagine how much that would weigh?). However, she did neither; instead he now stands in her living room.

  • Jodie Foster | In a Trophy Case 6 of 8
    jodie oscar

Jodie Foster first opted to keep her Oscars® in the bathroom, claiming: "They looked good with the faucets!" She has since moved the two she won for The Accused and Silence of the Lambs to a much more orthodox spot: A trophy case.

  • George Clooney | In His Library 7 of 8
    george oscar

A classy man like George Clooney, who has won two Oscars® — one for Best Supporting Actor in Syriana in 2005 and the other as co-producer of Argo last year — keeps his in his library. Oh, to have an Oscar® ... and a library to put it in.

  • Russell Crow | In a Chicken Coop 8 of 8

My favorite place where an Academy Award® winner keeps their Oscar® has to be Russell Crow, who ingeniously keeps his in a chicken coop in his Australian ranch. Crowe, who won in 2001 for A Beautiful Mind, apparently thinks it helps the hens lay bigger eggs! Maybe he is hoping for a golden egg?!
