The couple released one of those standard issue statements to People saying: “We will always love each other and be best friends, however, we have mutually decided to separate at this time.” Some may have thought these two crazy kids would be able to make it work, especially since they have been together since high school, yes HIGH SCHOOL. But they are completely different people than when they met at a teen dance club back in 1993.
“We didn’t always know,” Paula said of their relationship. “I met him when he was 14 and I was 15; I didn’t know that was going to be my husband. Something just happened. Sometimes people grow apart, but we grew together, and it just kept getting better and better. ”
She added: “We’ve always been dreaming the same dream together since we were kids: He wanted to be a singer, and I wanted to be an actress. Listen, we go through some ups and downs, but he’s the best thing that ever happened to me.”
These comments were made back in October in an interview, but as we all know, celebrities often put on a happy face for the press. The two have both been very publicly supportive of each others’ careers from Paula positively spinning the Miley Cyrus twerking incident to Robin Thicke walking the red carpet for Paula’s last film Baggage Claim.
But even though the two have been mutually supportive of each others careers, the support for each other in the role of husband and wife has apparently deteriorated. Here is the thing, a celebrity marriage is tough, really tough. The temptations; the days, weeks, and even months apart; and the oftentimes huge egos are just a few of the obstacles in the way of marital bliss in Hollywood. It gets even more complicated because alongside their busy filming and touring schedules, they are raising a son, Julian Fuego Thicke, who was born in April 2010.
I count myself lucky in the ways of love. My husband and I aren’t jetting off all over the world without each other, we aren’t in the limelight, and Miley Cyrus is not writhing on either of us. We are always here for each other. When you lead the kinds of lives that Robin Thicke and Paula Patton lead, it would be really hard to keep that connection strong. So few famous couples are able to keep their relationships solid. Beyonce and Jay Z, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, as well as Fergie and Josh Duhamel seem to make it work despite the odds stacked against them. But they seem to make the sacrifices to be with the other while they are on tour or on set. It’s not just the scheduling issues in the case of Robin Thicke and Paula Patton. When they met, they were so very young; now that they are both famous, the game has changed — and apparently not for the better.
Let’s hope that they will, as they said, remain “best friends” for the sake of their son.
