Your Daily Entertainment Advent: December 13th!Dresden Shumaker
Welcome to the Babble Entertainment Advent Calendar! Every week day between now and Christmas, we will treat you with fun facts and information about this day in entertainment history.
Today one of our national treasures, Dick Van Dyke, turns 87. I’ll always think of Dick as “Bert,” the lovable and magical chimney sweep from Mary Poppins. Earlier this week Van Dyke reunited with Julie Andrews and the cast of Saving Mr. Banks (which is based on the making of Mary Poppins). Obviously the natural thing that should happen during such a meeting did, indeed, happen. Everyone broke out into song! Deadline shares, “At a photo opp before the film the Banks cast members along with Andrews and Van Dyke and studio execs Bob Iger and Alan Horn all joined in a spontaneous rendition of the catchy tune from Poppins, ‘Let’s Go Fly a Kite.’ Those singing along included the indefatigable two-time Oscar winning co-writer of that song and the entire score, Richard M. Sherman.” The entire moment was captured on video and will make you grin. I love knowing that the daydream I have of certain icons getting together actually happens — sometimes they really do just launch into a song! Watch “Let’s Go Fly a Kite”
Speaking of icons, Christopher Plummer is also celebrating a birthday. The actor, who turns 83 today, has had a week of non-stop Sound of Music press everywhere he goes. The actor made no official comment on the Carrie Underwood televised remake, but he did have words to say when he learned of the death of Eleanor Parker. Eleanor played the Baroness in the 1965 movie version of Sound of Music and she passed away earlier this week. Christopher said, “Eleanor Parker was and is one of the most beautiful ladies I have ever known. I hardly believe the sad news for I was sure she was enchanted and would live forever.”
Taylor Swift got the gift of friendship for her birthday this year. Today Taylor celebrates her 23rd birthday and earlier this week she was seen hanging out with and having fun with up-and-coming star, Lorde. New York Magazine reports this is the second time the girls have hung out this month, and in rockstar time, that is epic.
