Welcome to the Babble Entertainment Advent Calendar! Every week day between now and Christmas, we will treat you with fun facts and information about this day in entertainment history.
The city of Atlanta petitioned the director of Gone With the Wind to hold the film premiere in Georgia instead of Hollywood. On December 15th, 1939 100,000 fans lined the streets around the Loews Grand theatre for a glimpse of the movies stars. Molly Haskell wrote about the movie premiere for CNN and shared how controvertial the night was. In her piece she reminds us that not all stars were allowed to go to the premiere in segregated Atlanta. Watch footage of the premiere of Gone With the Wind:
Writer and director Julie Taymor is 61 today. Julie is currently directing and off-Broadway production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream that is getting rave reviews. The NY Times says, “for Ms. Taymor, the sky is not the limit. It’s a supple canvas to be stretched and bent to the whims of the imagination.” After looking at photos from previews of the show all I can say is WOW. Seriously. Not that I would have expected anything less from the Tony award winning director of The Lion King.
Lady Mary is celebrating a birthday today! Ok, actually it is actress Michelle Dockery who is turning 32, but the star feels very attached to her character. In a recent interview with UK In Style magazine Michelle talks about how great it is to have job security in her life right now. “I worked out I moved 16 times from the age of 19, just hopping about from different flats, because I couldn’t always afford to stay. It’s lovely to feel stability.”
Today is also a special day in my family: Happy Birthday, Mom!
