Welcome to the Babble Entertainment Advent Calendar! Every week day between now and Christmas, we will treat you with fun facts and information about this day in entertainment history.
This is the anniversary of the day Prince Charles and Princess Diana announced their separation. The Prime Minister read a statement to the press and it was very brief. “This decision has been reached amicably and they will both continue to participate fully in the upbringing of their children.” In a New York Times article from 1992 it states, “Church of England issued a statement saying the Prince, as the future King, could preside as head of the church despite the breakup of his marriage.”
A made-for-TV movie was swiftly made in 1992 but I think we can all agree that Charles and Diana: Unhappily Ever After was one of the worst TV movies made. Entertainment Weekly sums it up well in their review by saying the movie has, “dramaturgy worthy of an elementary school pageant.”
One of the patriarchs of modern film, Kirk Douglas, turns 97 years old today. Born Issur Danielovitch in 1916 in Amsterdam, New York, Kirk Douglas reinvented himself in Hollywood, as only the best were able to do. He is Spartacus! He is also Ned Land in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Celebrate Kirk today by turning up your laptop speakers and blasting “Whale of a Tale.”
Dame Judi Dench is one of my all-time favorite actors. She turns 79 today and is currently staring in Philomena, a movie inspired by the real-life journey of a woman on a quest to find her biological son. I love that Judi and her daughter and grandson all live together as a modern family unit. It is a household that mirrors my own and I do think my mother is every bit as stately and wonderful as Judi is. If you want a laugh you have to watch this clip of a recent segment of Dame Judi on The Graham Norton Show. Priceless!
Being John Malkovich just got a lot more fashionable. The actor, who turns 60 today, is busy showing a men’s fashion collection in Paris. The collection, called Technobohemian by John Malkovich, will be for sale exclusively in Paris. He debuted the line at the Puerto Rican Museum of Art in November. Reuters has a slideshow of the collection and it’s pretty interesting. It includes several skirt options for men.
