Susanna Clark’s sprawling bestseller, Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, was optioned as a movie in 2005, but it will hit the little screen first. And it should be pretty great.
Ray Donovan‘s Eddie Marsan will play Mr. Norrell to British stage actor Bertie Carvel’s Jonathan Strange. The story takes place in England during the Napoleonic Wars and traces the relationship between Strange and Norrell, two magicians with differing philosophies about how magic should be used. This will make for an intriguing mini-series.
It wont’ be the first book-turned-TV-phenomenon to take America by storm via the British Isles. The BBC’s Sherlock, adapted from the Arthur Conan Doyle series, turned Benedict Cumberbatch into a household name. While the period drama, Downton Abbey, created by author Julian Fellowes swept the United States pulling in 9 million viewers worldwide.
Could Mr. Norrell be the new Mr. Crawley? We’ll see! In the meantime, read the book so you’ll be ready for the show. It’s a great Halloween read!
