4 Steps to a Perfect Ponytail

By Cathy Hale |

If you have long hair and you’re a mom, chances are you wear a ponytail. I personally love ponytails. I also live in Texas where it’s like 100 degrees most of the time, so a ponytail is more of a necessity than an option. There’s also the issue of time or the lack of it. The perfect ponytail will last from Cheerios with the kiddos until nite-nite time.

If you can’t seem to harness a stylish ponytail, here are a few easy tips to help you out. Whether you want to wear it up high or low down, messy or polished, you’ll have a great starting point for achieving your look. Plus, a few cool item to keep your ponytail fashionable & fun. There are many perfect ponytail theories floating around out there, but I agree with the one featured in Woman’s Day last month. To me, the key to a lasting ponytail is teasing and hairspray. Again, I do live in Texas. Get ready to revisit the 80s, because hairspray & teasing are a must!

Step #1 – Spray your hair lightly with hairspray, especially if it’s clean. Clean hair is slippery and you need just a touch of texture to make sure you’re hair will stay put. If you have curly hair, you might want to use a flat iron to straighten it before you put it in a ponytail for a sleek style.

Step #2 – Divide your hair into four sections. It takes a little bit of extra time to do this, but it does provide a more styled, even look in the end. You will only style the top three sections, not the back one.

Step #3 – Tease away! There is a method to teasing hair if you’ve never done it before. Use a small comb and starting midshaft, comb hair down towards your scalp. This creates volume and lift and a reason for your husband to laugh at you if he happens to catch you in this part of the process.

Step #4 - Remove the ponytail holders from the sections and gently brush the hair into one ponytail. Don’t brush too hard or you will brush out all of the volume you just created. It does take a bit of practice to smooth out your hair, but practice makes perfect! You can also grab a piece of hair from the bottom of your ponytail and wrap it around the ponytail holder to disguise it. Secure the strand of hair with a bobby pin.

Cool Ponytail Products: Jazz up your ponytail with pretty Juicy Couture Charms and keep your ponytail smooth all day long with a tiny solution, The Hairspray Pen! Sephora carries HerCut The Ponytail Styling Lotion to help you smooth hair and control fly-aways.
