Buy or DIY: Planked Walls

plank walls

Planked walls are very popular right now, with tutorials and ideas all over the blogosphere. Sarah at Thrifty Decor Chick did a wonderful stairwell, above, and Jenny from Little Green Notebook just transformed her mudroom, both using different DIY wall planking techniques. Now a new product, Stikwood, aims to help those that are a little less power tool savvy create similar looks.

Stikwood comes as adhesive planks, similar to thick wallpaper, that are easily cut to fit without major tools. While I haven’t seen them in person, from the description I imagine they function much like Flor tiles, only with a more permanent installation. Still a bit of a DIY if you install yourself, but with the finish already set and no tools required. At $320 for 40 square feet, it is a polished, if not economical, option.

For DIYers on a budget, both Jenny and Sarah have detailed tutorials on their blogs. Each uses different materials and finishes, so you can find instructions on just the style you want to create.

So which would you choose, buy or DIY?
