How ANYONE Can Wear the Hottest Lipstick Trend

michellehorton michellehorton |

Orange lips.

Now before you write-off this trend as an 80s flashback gone wrong, know that this is actually an incredibly wearable and flattering (yes, flattering!) look. You just have to find the right shade for your coloring and personality.

From blood orange to tangerine, there’s an orange shade for you. Read our tips on how to make this look work for you:

  • Peachy/Pink Orange

    Peachy/Pink Orange

The great thing about any color in the orange family is that it instantly adds warmth, whether your skin is pale or dark. If you’re unsure, try either a pink-ish coral or a lighter peach — both universally flattering, and easy transitions into the orange trend.

Best For: Anyone who wants to dip their toe in the orange trend.

    Try:
YSL Rouge Volupté Silky Sensual Radiant Lipstick in Peach Passion, $34
Revlon Super Lustrous Créme Lipstick, $7.99
    MAC Vegas Volt, $17.50

  • Sheer Orange

    Sheer Orange

If you want to go for the orange yet are put-off by anything too opaque, go for a sheer tint, balm or gloss. It's also a lightweight option for summer.

Best For: Anyone scared of too much pigment. It’s also a good choice for those who like gloss over matte, because bold orange looks best without too much shimmer.

    Try:
Sephora Be You Lip Balm, $12
Dior Addict Ultra Gloss in Shimmering Tangerine, $28

  • Red Orange

Best For: A red-orange lipstick looks flattering on virtually anyone, and it’s a good compromise for anyone apprehensive about "vixen" red. For those with cool skin tones, opt for one that’s heavier on the red to compliment your blue-based skin tone. Adding pink (like in coral shades) or red is always a good idea for ladies with fair skin and dark hair.

    Try:
Revlon ColorBurst Lipstick in Coral, $6.49
NARS Lipstick in Heat Wave, $24

  • Tangerine Orange

    Tangerine Orange

Tangerine is the signature color of 2012, and it can actually be a quite flattering lip color that brightens up any complexion — especially in the summer. That being said, bold tangerine can take some confidence to pull off.

Best For: It depends. Tangerine has a smidge more red in it than pure orange (which is equal parts orange and yellow), so it can look flattering on cool and warm undertones. If the color leans more toward orange, it looks best on those with olive/yellow undertones.

    Try:
Revlon Moon Drops in Orange, $8.99

Rouge Shine Lipstick in Latin Lover, $12
YSL Rouge Pur Couture SPF 15 in 13 Le Orange, $32

  • Neon Orange

    Neon Orange

The bolder your lip color, the less makeup you should wear on the rest of your face. And a matte orange tends to be a little less jarring (and a little more fashionista) than one that’s bold and glossy.

Best For: Anyone who wants to make a statement. Bright orange tends to look best on warmer complexions with dark or light hair.

    Try:
    MAC Lipstick in Morange, $14.50
Urban Decay Super-Saturated High Gloss Lip Color, $19

  • Nude/Gold Gloss

    Nude/Gold Gloss

That being said, layering a nude or gold gloss over a bright orange is an easy way to tone down the hue.

Best For: A gold gloss over a bold orange is best for warm skintones. Otherwise use a nude or pink-ish gloss.

Try: Stila Lip Glaze in Amaretto, $22

  • Nude Lip Liner

    Nude Lip Liner

If you feel like you need a little lip liner, an orange liner can look too clown-ish with orange lipstick — especially because the shades of orange can vary so drastically. That’s why a nude skin-colored liner looks best with any orange lip color.

Try: Smashbox The Nude Lip Liner, $17

  • Orange Lip Liner

Yet an orange lip liner might be all you need. If you’re on the fence about going orange, yet are tempted by the skin-brightening look, just lightly line your lips with orange and layer a neutral gloss over top.

Try:Make Up For Ever Aqua Lip Waterproof Lipliner Pencil in Vibrant Tangerine Orange, $18

  • Black Mascara

    Black Mascara

The biggest thing to remember with a bold lip (like orange) is to keep the rest of your face simple. The best compliment to an orange lip is basic black mascara. (And maybe a little bronzer or peach color on your cheeks.) If you’re going lighter on the lips, metallic eye shadow can work.

    Try: Benefit BADgal lash, $19

  • Strong Brows

    Strong Brows

A bright lip looks best with a strong brow. Try shaping and filling your brows for a better look.

Try: Sephora Eyebrow Editor Complete Brow Kit, $19
