How to Avoid the Yoga Pants Trap

By Melanie Blodgett |

A couple weeks ago Tim Gunn tweeted, “Is everyone I see wearing yoga pants out in public actually on her way to or from yoga class? I suspect not.” Isn’t that the truth? For some reason (I suspect the comfortable factor) yoga pants have become the garment of choice for everyday activities and nobody seems to mind. Hello middle class sweatpants.

I know I’ve been guilty a time or two quickly running into Target in workout gear and since I’m a stay-at-home mom, comfy clothes call out to me daily. But I realize I don’t want that to become a habit. I definitely feel more prepared for the day when I actually put an outfit on that doesn’t include an elastic band waist. So when the yoga pants beckon, this is what I tell myself:

“Putting on those stretchy pants will take just as much time and effort as putting on a pair of Levi’s and an easy tee.”

That’s it! I’ve found that I never regret my decision since they’re still comfortable but much better looking. And I feel a lot cuter when my husband gets home.

Do you have any other tips for avoiding the daily yoga pants trap?

I NEVER wear exercise clothes unless I’m exercising. In fact I keep all of my exercise clothes in one drawer away from my everyday stuff. I never leave the house unless I’m in a proper outfit with my hair and make up done. Anything else just screams “I’m lazy, and have given up trying”. The author is 100% right, it’s just not that hard to put on a pair of jeans.

I love you outfit in that picture! Jeans and a comfy tees are the epitome of my style…all it takes are some fun accessories to dress it up!

I used to do this all the time until I ran into a male friend at a coffee shop and he asked if I was on my way to the gym….um no. haha!

I’ve turned to yoga pants a lot since I’ve been losing weight. My jeans don’t fit well right now, but the yoga pants always work. I need to make sure I always have at least one well-fitting pair of jeans since they definitely look better.

One reason to avoid the yoga pants? Well, researcher (yes, someone actually studied this) found that people who wear jeans at least one day a week or more were thinner than their counterparts. I think it’s because jeans can be so un-forgiving so they keep you in check weight wise or they are a nasty reminder to behave!

I love jeans and I feel better about myself when I’m not in yoga pants (I must own some, but never wear them, I don’t do yoga!). I like feeling put together, even in a comfy pair of jeans.

While I LOVE my yoga pants, I wear them WAY too often. Love this post!

  9. Meghan Gesswein says:

I *usually* put jeans on to run errands and drop off/pick up the kids, but when I get home and get to work (either cleaning or writing) I switch to yoga pants.

It’s the best of both worlds!

Though I don’t wear yoga pants outside of the house, I live in them once inside. Like…right now for instance. Because hey, running around, playing, and cleaning up after a couple of kids is a lot like yoga (though much less relaxing). Maybe I just need to find the right pair of comfy jeans!
