Must-Have School Supplies for Every Age

Besides the sneakers, backpack and wardrobe purchases, you’ll need to start thinking about all of the school supplies that go inside of those adorable backpacks. And with big sales going on right now at Office Depot (5-cent folders and free backpacks), Office Max ($1.50 binders and Buy 2 Get 1 Free supplies), and Target ($1.50 off Mead cloth binders), it’s better to get your shopping done earlier rather than later.

So if you’re heading to the mall this week but haven’t gotten your kid’s school supply list in the mail, here are some safe bet school supplies that your kids will most likely need. And if they don’t? You can always donate to the classroom and start on the teacher’s good side:

Kindergarten School Supply list:

  • 6 – 12 #02 pencils
  • 1 box of crayons (fat crayons are easier for little hands to hold)
  • 1 zipper pencil pouch to hold the school supplies
  • 1 pencil eraser
  • 1 box of classic markers
  • 2 – 4 glue sticks
  • 1 bottle of glue
  • 1  two-pocket folder for artwork and school notices
  • 5″ child-safe scissors
  • 1 box of facial tissues
  • 1 Nap Mat
  • Name labels…for every school supply

Grades 1 – 2 School Supply List:

  • 1 box of crayons
  • 1 box of markers
  • 1 box of colored pencils
  • 2 – 4 glue sticks
  • 12 #02 pencils
  • 1 – 2 pencil erasers
  • 1 pencil case
  • 1 – 2 wide-ruled spiral bound notebooks
  • 1 – 3 two-pocket folders
  • 1 pair of child-safe scissors
  • 1 ruler with inches and centimeters
  • 1 box of facial tissue
  • Name labels

Grades 3 – 5 School Supply List:

  • 1 box of markers
  • 1 box of colored pencils
  • 12 – 36 #02 pencils
  • 1 package of blue or black pens
  • 1 pencil case
  • 2 pencil erasers
  • 5″ scissors
  • 2 – 4 glue sticks
  • 1 ruler with inches and centimeters
  • Protractor
  • Compass
  • 2 – 3 spiral bound, wide ruled notebooks
  • 300 sheets of wide ruled loose-leaf paper
  • 1″ 3-ring binder
  • 5 two-pocket folders
  • 1 box of facial tissue

Middle School Supply List:

  • 12 – 36 #02 pencils
  • 1 package of blue or black pens
  • 1 enclosed pencil sharpener (small)
  • 2 – 4 highlighters
  • 1 – 2 pencil erasers
  • 1 pair of scissors
  • 3-ring binder with dividers
  • 300-sheet loose leaf paper, wide rule
  • 5  two-pocket folders
  • 3 – 5 spiral bound notebooks
  • Protractor
  • Compass
  • 1 package of graph paper
  • Four function calculator
  • 1 – 2 packages of 3 x 5 lined note cards
  • 1 – 2 packages of Post-It notes
  • 1 pocket dictionary and thesaurus
  • 1 pocket second language dictionary (if second language classes are offered in their middle school)
  • 1 student planner
  • 1 stapler with staples
  • 1 staple remover
  • White out or correction tape
  • 1 box of facial tissue

High School Supply List:

  • 12 – 36 #02 pencils — either mechanical or traditional
  • 1 – 2 packages of blue or black pens
  • 1  packages of highlighters
  • 2 pencil erasers
  • 1 spiral-bound notebook for each subject
  • 1 two-pocket folder for each subject
  • 300 sheets of loose-lead paper, college rule
  • 3-ring binder with dividers
  • 1 Stapler with staples
  • 1 Staple remover
  • White out or correction tape
  • 1 enclosed pencil sharpener (small)
  • 1 – 2 packages of 3 x 5 lined note cards
  • 1 -2 packages of Post-It notes
  • 1 scientific or graphing calculator
  • 1 Pocket dictionary and thesaurus
