Play Tents for Kids

By Nicole Balch |

We went to my mom’s house this weekend. She had a play tent by Playhut there, and all the kids absolutely loved it. My husband and I loved it too — it’s lightweight and portable, and it folds up for storing. When we saw how much fun our toddler was having in it, we thought we would get one to keep at our house too. Here are a few of the designs available.

What do you think? The Playhut tents are really fun, but I do wish they had some solid color or simple patterned options. Do you mind toys with characters on them? Do you think your kids like them better?

Keep your eye out for other options too. I picked up a tent for my son on SUPER clearance at Target a few months ago. Red and blue solid colors, shaped like a rocket-ship. Super cute! They actually had that Thomas tent too, but I opted for the solid route. A little less loud, and my son doesn’t care at all.

I had something like this as a kid, and there were no characters involved. (I believe it was from Playmobil.) Sad that Disney brands everything these days like this.

btw, the creepiness of the photoshopping in these pics is really getting to me. Is Thomas radioactively blue?! (check out the kid’s shirt)

A little birdie told me that IKEA will have a new tent in August that looks like a circus tent. It’s red and orange striped and has a blue flag on top with blue curtains in front. It may not fit the color scheme of your place exactly, but it is really cute (and much less heinous as these character tents!)

I am purchasing a plain canvas play tent from here. They are pretty affordable at $50. You can buy them with some hand painting as well, but I prefer mine plain old canvas :)

What about one of these, to go over a simple card table?

My boy loves plain old boxes and blankets; when I get tired of looking at them or the get too worn I throw them out (the boxes) or fold them up (the blankets) and put the back in the bedroom. No cost, no obnoxious colors/characters, and they even do double-duty!
My parents are allowed to buy the big and noisy toys, as long as they stay at their house! Extra special “Grandpa & Grandma’s house toys” are never a bad thing. They also have the big backyard, the pets, the swingset, and the garden that he’s allowed to dig in.

Ikea has a few great cheap options. Both are solid colored and fold up small. I can’t seem to find them on the website though.

We have a red one from IKEA, and I’m looking forward to the day that my son would be old enough to set up a sheet/blanket tent independently. One of my friends had cup hooks hanging on her walls and ceilings to make it easy to build blanket tents, and it was AWESOME. Until the two year old is old enough, I’ll just be scouting thrift stores for cool coordinating sheets!

Here is the IKEA one, we have one and think it’s pretty cute
